Im resurrecting this '83 CM450e that had sat for over a decade. I cleaned out tank and painted it. Installed new tires and tubes. New battery. Rebuilt carbs with kits after cleaning them in an ultrasonic cleaner. My air/fuel screws were set at 2 which I think is factory setting. I'm using stock air filter and exhaust. It immediately started up without hesitation, but it only runs with choke all the way out. My understanding is that the choke enriches the mixture so that tells me it is running lean. I also am understanding that the airfuel mixture adjusts out to let more fuel into the mixture so I tried turning both screws out a full turn(which should only affect idle). That seemed to help just a tiny tiny bit. But it still won't run without the choke. As long as the choke is on it will idle and rev fine. Checked intake manifolds for leaks. Right plug looks black but not oily. Left is tan/gray. I know this symptom usually points to carbs but I have rebuilt many carbs. What am I missing?

when you cleaned the carbs did you remove the pressed in slow jet and the emulsion tube below the jet

the carbs are lean burn and have tiny passages you are still clogged up

I have now pulled the carbs three times and cleaned them in an ultrasonic cleaner. This last time I made sure all jets and passages were clear. All o rings are new and in place. I bench synced them. Set the air/fuel mixture screw at 2.5 turns out. Tank and petcock are clean. No leaks at manifolds. This is really frustrating me.

I have not checked valve clearances. I will have to do that when I have time.

Today I am installing the accelerator diaphragm and the two air cut-off valve diaphragms. More agony! The old one and the new one are different. The new ones have a bulb at the end. I looked on line and most I see are like the new one, although I did see a couple that look like my old one. The orifice where the shaft/bulb goes into has a brass bushing that looks to be pressed into place and a spring loaded check valve that is pushed by the diaphragm shaft. So, again, I hit a brick wall! Did they send me the wrong diaphragms? I hate to have to wait for another order.
