A newbies guide to angle grinding

Hello friends,

I need to grind off the helmet hooks and some other points in order to mount my seat. I went out and got myself an angle grinder and I'm about to go at it. However, I really don't know what I'm doing.

Should I take off the full-of-gas tank or should I be ok just covering it? Will red hot pieces of steel destroy my tires? Anything else I need to know?

Did you get a cut off wheel for it also? I used a cut off wheel on mine to remove the brackets and then switch to a grinding disc to get rid of whats left of the bracket and the weld. It couldn't hurt to take the gas tank off. Better safe than sorry. You shouldn't have any problems with the tires though.
 
You may want to practice on something that is scrap to get a feel for the grinder and the various grinding and sanding disks...It has helped me in the past...
 
take the gas tank off! and cutting wheels would be good and save some time. I didn't use anything but a grinder, and it worked okay. There are some tight spots that a cut off wheel would be great for. good luck and take your time.
 
I went at it about 5 minutes after posting this. You guys really gotta be on the ball. If I have a dumb question, I would appreciate a prompt answer. ;D

My practice was on the rear helmet holder. I had already taken a hacksaw to it but a lot of it was still there. The grinder worked perfectly! It's really easy to use. I left my tank on but covered it with suede. No problems. But I still have to do the other helmet holder...the one right beside the tank. I'll take it off before I tackle that one. I should have picked one of these things up years ago.
 
I'd move the tank mostly because it's in the way of grinding. Those sparks won't due anything to your tires and make sure you hold onto that grinder good and tight. If it catches it could rip out of your hands and do damage to your bike and more importantly you.

in tight places where you need to remove the guard to get in be VERY careful - those grinding discs will put a divot in your digits quicker than I could have imagined
