Anachronism: the heap formerly known as Bitch!!

Swagger

Putting boot to ass since 1967!
Ok. Fine.

So I've been getting pinged on about posting a build, and I give up.....you win. Here's one that's just starting.

A little foundational info might be in order here so sit back and get comfy...it's likely to get long winded, but I'll describe what's underway as best as I can.

Base bike is a 1975/6 Honda CB500T, this one (pre-teardown) with around 3000 on the clock, it sat in several garages and storage units until ultimately coming into my horde. Long story short, this one belonged to my buddy whose cat decided it desperately needed to mate with my brand new couch and loveseat. A lot. Often. In the end the couches are in shreds and there's one more funny little motorcycle in my storage.
cb500t1.jpg

A the point this photo was taken the yellow seat base was just sitting there for visual reference.

Unfortunately he never got me the title so I had to search and dig but ended up with two more frames with title and a way to get the title on this one, so...whatever.

Here's a shot of one of the frames propped up in my machine shop while I hang various bits off of it and make VROOM VROOM noises.
proportion.jpg

Shown is a glass tank I got from a member here, unfortunately I won't be able to use it as it's got a couple bashes that render it useless but I'll probably bondo it up and pull a mold from it and bust out a few. At least that's what I'm leaning toward...I love the proportion. After talking with Bret at Glass from the Past I've learned that regardless of the suzuki on the side and honda underneath, it's actually a replica Triumph 500 short course tank. Cool. Propped on the back is just the cowl from my SuperIII juuuust visible in the top pic. (there are six bikes in that pic)

proportion2.jpg

This one shows the new swing arm in place, just waiting for lower shock mounts to be added and a concept for the tail shape. I kinda like the profile of the yellow cowl better though....we'll see.

Swing arm rework, donor: 05-6 EX500

WARNING!!!!!!: this setup is not safe. I don't recommend anyone doing shit like this because you may get killed.
I took the chance because I made the decision to do so.
scarybadnotsafe.jpg

again...this is probably not the safest fixturing but I was working off the end of the mill table as I had a project that required the vice NOT TO BE MOVED....whatever....I survived and so did the swing arm.
In truth it was really solidly bolted to the table with aluminum blocks underneath. But still.......don't, really.....

Ok, here's how I started, by cutting off the OE linkage pivot from the bottom of the swinger
slice.jpg

Yay for slitters and using tool in ways they were never intended.......

coming at it from the other side....

Re: Build to be named eventually

And more.......

setdepth.jpg

I'd originally meant to cut to the scribe (again, cutting corners) but luckily reason got the better part of me and I ground a piece of tube to fit inside nice and snug, tapped it in, set the depth with a micrometer and locked it in place with a grub screw.

killkillkill.jpg

Kill Kill KILL!! Yeah so here's where it gets hairy for me. Hacking off the pivot is no big deal...it just needed to be gone.
However, eff up here and the rework gets troublesome. It's easy to take off metal...not so much to put it back on. But..in the end it went really well and fits the bike nicely. I have a buddy who's business is precision grinding. That's all his does and they do it really well. They are handling my swing arm pivot which will be ground 4130 tube, heat treated to suit and threaded on both ends for castle nuts. I can't claim this brilliant idea...one of ours here had some axles made in the same way for his XS650 and I just ran with the idea..

Not shown because it's not done yet...duh....
1) I'll be making 2" aluminum eccentrics that will fit steel clamps welded to the swing arm that will allow adjustable bottom shock mounts. This will allow some adjustment of the ride height and to a certain extent the "action" of the shock in relation to the swing arm...leverage ratio adjustment.

2) 12.75" adjustable Koni shocks. I have a pair that I've been saving, adjustable compression and rebound damping, threaded bodies and flexibly mounted (on a braided hose) remote reservoirs. I dunno what exactly they came off of, but they were custom built set for a big superbike in the early 80's. Eyes on both ends so probably not a Honda. I imagine I'll be tweaking spring values some but that's easy to deal with later. I just got them off to Koni for a factory refresh, the engineer I talked to got all kinds of excited when I described them and there was some Teutonic chatter in the back ground. I guess they're pretty neato.....

3) Forks are from the same EX500 donor with a few goodies added; Racetech has pulled a lovely pair of springs for me at .720kg/mm (fairly firm) and a pair of nifty cartridge emulators. Along with these new bits I'm going to turn up a pair of threaded preload adjusters with plumbing for air should I feel the need to a wee bit more sproing up front.

I just really dig this picture!

Re: Build to be named eventually

Wawaweewa...love me some sexy back dimples. Sweet bike too, should be cool to see you actually workin on something ;D :P

Re: Build to be named eventually

the day swagger started a build thread.. one of the best days of my life ;D

wooooooohooooooo!!!!

Re: Build to be named eventually

there was a build thread in with the girlie pic?

seriously though, very cool stuff so far swagger.

Re: Build to be named eventually

Tuned in. This should be a sick build, with all the machining your able to do I'm sure it will be a future BOTM.

Sorry you couldnt fix the tank Lee, if you decide to make a plug and produce a few tanks I'll be interested in one.

Re: Build to be named eventually

Swagger's build thread? I'm putting the kettle on, looking forward to this. I've heard talk swagger that "you da' man" insofar as your wizardry with all things mechanical and otherwise. Might i suggest for a temporary name you could go with "Da' Man's Bitch"?

Re: Build to be named....Bitch

Staffy: Bitch it is....(until something more suitable come to mind. Walter perhaps.....)

m357.5: Meh, you didn't know mate. I gotta figure out how to get the gas cap off so I can try and prep it. I have enough 'spare' equipment and disregard for my own safety that I can put together a functional (if not pretty) autoclave so I should be able to pull pretty clean and strong pieces out. I messed with the process in highshool but since have just laid up glass Au Natural. Ima gonna need to read up a bit again....

Go!: I'm glad to help love, but methinkst you should set your sites a tad higher for a 'best day of your life"....but thanks. Made me smile..

Thanks very much guys, really. Hopefully there will be enough here worth the praise eventually..
I'll get as much done as I can between the regular jobs, so it may be hit or miss for a while..

Re: Bitch!

I love the look of the "loaf of bread" style of tanks!

...also the chick in nothing but flip-flops...

Re: Bitch!

ok... the work was cool and all... but that one picture just got me HOOKED ;)

will be following

Re: Bitch!

Subscribed and all of that.

I love that tank.

That last picture was not so bad either.

PM sent about the machine work.

Re: Bitch!

Yeah, I like the ass best. But the tank's nice too.

Re: Bitch!

Heh...you guys are gold!

Not much happening at the moment, I did start on a couple spools for the rear swingarm though and will be doing another mockup with the forks and wheels hopefully this weekend and not on a bucket either! :P

Re: Bitch!

Rad work man! You've got some skills!
Can't wait to see what both our bikes will look like! When they're done it'd be rad to go for a ride with ya man, il keep an eye on this
