Another noobie from North Carolina

Hello everyone. I've been lurking for a little while and finally decided to join. I have a 1980 CX500 custom that I'm going to turn into a cafe racer. Right now I'm gathering little parts I need and doing research. There are going to be a lot of firsts for me with this bike. Not sure how long it'll take me, but I'm hoping I'll enjoy it. I apologize in advance for the barrage of questions that will be coming in the next few months. ;D

Hi Dean,

Welcome to the DTT forum, lot of neat bikes here.

Please come and visit when you pass thru Raleigh. I am also thinking of building a cafe from a CX500 and is planning to convert the wheels to spoke wheels. I might have other parts for you too.

thanks for the welcome. i wish i had the talent or money to make spoked rims. i've only seen one person do it and that was on a european cx site. it would really help with the look and cut down on some weight.

not sure if you know, but there's a cx gathering over near charlotte the weekend of june 5-6. i'll be riding my fz6 (since the cx won't even be close to ready) if i'm able to make it. if you're interested in going the details are on choppercharles.com. if i go i'll be riding out with charles (who put that website up and built the chopper on the front page). he too (unless you're him) is building a cafe out of a cx500 and is hoping to do some spoked wheels. he's hoping to have it ready for the gathering. i saw it at a pretty beginning stage and all i can say is that i can't wait to see the finished product.

Welcome Dean. This isa great site and a lot of people here are more than willing to chime in and help. Post some pics of your bike start a build thread and share with us what you are planning or think you want to do and even share your doubts and concerns and someone that has been there already will help you out.
So I see you're in Pittsboro, i work in Durham but live in Franklinton. You're not too far off to meet and get together some day.

thanks for the welcome. i plan to start a thread as soon as i'm ready to start working on the bike. right now i'm working on paperwork issues. you know how nc can be. if i don't get the paperwork worked out then i'll be looking for a titled frame. hopefully it won't come to that. i'm hoping to have everything sorted out in the next week or three.

just curious to know if you've done anything with your cx500? i'd love to see some progress pics.

also, as far as wheels, not sure what you have already but i'm looking for a set of the older silver wheels (the one's with the 18" rear). if you have a set, and simply need the hubs, i'd gladly trade you a set of the newer black wheels.
