Hi Everyone

suckinrabbits.TV are interested to hear from anyone that would be interested in racing their Cafe Racer motorcycle here in the UK.

Class proposal
Starting 2013
8 rounds, same circuit (one per month starting march)
up to 600cc class or over 600cc class.
No build restrictions (anything goes) but must be a custom built bike with a cafe racer look (exact rule to be agreed)
Any tyre.
£70 entry (6 laps qualifying with 2 x 10 lap races)
Each additional class entry £30
Trophies for 1st, 2nd, 3rd

You would of course require an ACU race license which costs £45 per year.

We only need a minimum of 15 riders, committed to a season to make this happen (max 30 on the grid)

Some questions (sorry!)

What is the noise limit at Darley Moor? If it's like Castle Coombe it will be difficult for many "custom" built cafe racers to get through scrutineering without putting different silencers on the bike.

Will you be running age related classes or will it be a free for all? (even a highly modified 78 XS650 will struggle to compete with say a mid 90's era Jap in line four 600 (e.g. FZR600) that has been cafe'd)

When you say any tyre, will race compound slicks and wets be permissable?

The format you have described in the original post, looks very like the Streetfighter race series that is run in France which is pretty much a free for all, is that the kind of thing you are looking to do but with a Cafe Racer theme or will Streetfighter's also be allowed (some of them do look vaguely cafe racer)
 
One of my close friends, for whom we built a Gt500 cafe racer, is heavily into track days, and would welcome the chance to compete in this type of formula, but as the previous poster said, there is no fun in getting thoroughly spanked by a load of CBR's and GSXR's.

I will have to check this, but I do not think there is any on race days. I race at Darley on my 2009 ZX6r in the Formula 600cc class which has a full Akro race system. I have never been pulled or noise checked during scut. I will check and revert, but yes, there maybe a requirement to use a temporary baffle.

We could look at running two period classes per engine category? So pre 80s 600cc / 1000cc and over 80s 600cc /1000cc and make it 4 seperate championships? Not a problem.

Any tyre, so slick, treaded, wets etc. TBH, I doubt there would be a huge advantage over a slick and cut tyre. In fact most people do not run slicks due to the 10 laps races (cost, time required to get up to temp etc).

This is something (with the help of those wishing to compete) will have to look at and agree up on. For example, you could turn a new 1199 into a cafe racer and then lap everyone twice. The idea is to get the balance right between close, competitive racing, but without the ridiculous stifling regs that some classes have. Given the variety of bikes that are made into cafe racers, it would not make sense to over complicate the regs, otherwise you will end up with very few bikes that could actually race.

I would also point out that in every class of club racing I have ever competed in, there is ALWAYS someone who spanks everyone and takes it far too seriously. 8)

Please spread the word, we need as much feedback on this as possible.

Thanks for replying, make it pre 80's 750/1000cc so that I haven't got to chase those pesky Z900/1000's and GS1000's and I could be interested ;D

I'll pm you my e mail address so that you can contact me directly and keep me posted on progress with your plans. Sounds really interesting and if the classes look sensible it might compliment my plans to sprint the bike - stay in touch.

Stick a detailed post in the main forum, it might generate some more interest from the Brits - not all of the Brits visit this section very regularly.

Might also be worth sticking a post on www.xs650.com, there's a few Brits get on there. You could also try getting Surplus6 to put a post on old skool performance (if you haven't already done so)

Classic Bike magazine would probably promote it for you via the letters section and Streetfighters might be interested as they have just done a 4 page article on the french monsters race series which is pretty close to what you want to do but for pretty much any modified bike (no restrictions on looks)
