Aussie with a cb125 project....

Well after much searching around the web for good bike and cafe tips i found this site.....

Let em just say i pretty much signed up straight away (after spending half my work day reading old posts ;) )

I was given a sad cb125. It was ridden till is siezed one day and someone dissassembled the barrel and head and then lost the parts.

Here is where i came in. I was offered the bike for free minus head and barrel. I had never been into motorbikes but had been looking for a project of some sort and thought it would be a good place to start.... i had rebuilt a small turbo car when i was younger but had had all the engine work done by a shop so i wanted to learn how to do it myself... man how i have learnt!

i started looking for a head and barrel and outright couldnt find a cb125 one. I did how ever find a xl125s head that bolts up. I had this rebored and the valves cut and reseated and the engine is almost ready to go back together with its new cam chain etc. the only thing now is i have to work out how to get the cdi workign on a points bike..... ah well, hopefully you guys can help with that.

I am also thinking of making the whole bike batteryless by running a capacitor, but i will have to learn whats involved with that first i guess...

I am looking forward to the build and hopefuly i can document it here and use the collecing wisdom of the members.....

Any other Australians on here? Cafe style bikes are fairly rare on the streets here with favor given to flashy sport bikes.

Hi Jow - I'm up in Brisbane and am currently re-inventing a GS450 into something more classical....there's a few Aussies on here.

Welcome aboard DTT :)

Hey there,

I just bought a cb175 and will be doing a resto/slight cafe job on it. Probably just change the bars and declutter it a bit. The small CBs are great bikes.

I'm in Melb.

I am also in melbounre...... Id love a cb175....

but if i can get mine to look like this

i will be pretty happy........

i have a rather big job ahead i think especially as its my first build up and i plan on a full rewire to incorporate the CDI ignition, a full set of LED lights, change key position etc.

should be fun tho.

EDIT: i just found out tonight that i hate honda case screws! i am buying an impact driver tomorrow.........

G'day Jow and welcome,

Looks like there are a few guys in Melbourne, myself also being one of them.

I have a 750k8 that I am attempting to cafe.

I think you won't have a problem getting your bike to look like that. The mechanical upgrades, you are proposing, would be a challenge for me. But anyway, good luck with the project and look forward to tracking your progress.

Hopefully, we can get some more cafe style bikes on the streets here.

Cheers

To tell you the truth i am slightly worried about the engine up grades myself.....

I have never built an engine before so i am biting off more than i can chew. Hopefully i will be able to pull it off.......

Are there any good bike shops around Melbourne for parts and add on bits such as clubman bars etc? i just ordered a set off ebay and they cost a arm and a leg as the AU dollar is so weak at the moment.....

I haven't found any.

You've got interstate dealers like 'Z power' and 'Deus' but their stuff is pricey. Around 90 - 150 bux for clubman handlebars.

I got my clubmans from Ebay.

Around $75.00 delivered.

Online is where I look first.

Welcome! Definitely a nice project. I'm doing a lot of learning on mine, as well. Started motor work last week.

Hi Jow. I'm up on the north coast of NSW. Check out my thread on "big arse projects" title is XS in OZ. That bike you posted is imaculate. Hope you make it. I'm working on my first build. I 've been at it on and off for probably 2 years, but I'm trying to do all of it myself (except rebore powder coating etc).

Go for it.

i'm in melbourne too.
actually speaking of not seeing any cafe bikes around, i saw a douche on a deus sr, outside autobarn in the city, last week. douche cause he was weaving between pedestrians on the footpath like it was the starting grid at the GP.
and also someone on a kinda barrel backed cafe, with a 70's style airbrushed chopper paint job, that looked fascinating, in the same sort of area yesterday, didn't get a real good look at it though.

Idiots like that give us all a bad name. If the dude keeps that up he'll trash a great bike, not to mention himself (no great loss there).

Back on cafe style bikes in Melbourne. Today, in Richmond, I see this (not a cafe bike) black suzuki intruder (bobber) with a bicycle style solo seat and no front guard. Funny how as soon as you mention unusual bikes you start to see them.

Well today i got a fair bit done... Got all new stainless alenkey bolts to replace the crappy Phillips head screws on the case and also got the new cam chain on and also found that the cam chain guides fit nicely between the cb125n bottom end and the xl125 top end..... i just have to clean up all the gasket surfaces and then i can start thinking about putting it all back together... once that is done i just have to work out how to get the CDI working and start on going batteryless! fun fun.

Yesterday i saw a deuce sr400/500 around the brunswick st area... i have also seen a xs650 bobber that gets around that area too.....

I usually ride past a really hot triumph that parks on lygon in east bruswick, not sure what type but it's all bare metal and black, looks great.
