Ive found that most clearcoats dont stick well to bare metal...
usually turns yellow with age, rust will start to form underneath or it will peel off like plastic wrap...(especially if the metal is polished)...
The only clear coat I know that is designed to work with bare metal is POR-15 PC Glisten
Dont even waste your money on the spray can stuff..
I was going to coat my frame with por-15 Glisten PC, but after talking to a representative at the company decided against it. Apparently por-15 Glisten PC will not protect against rust (his exact words were "Glisten PC is not a rust inhibitor"... it is designed for non-ferrous metals. The guy I talked to said that it might last for a couple years at most before it will start to rust underneath the coating... and that was under perfect application conditions.
But it does work great on polished aluminum and chrome.
i spent a few months tackling this
only thing that didn't degrade the shine was a polyurethane spray sealant used for home furniture (kitchen tables namely)
i did a crap job but it's held and held well for about 5 months.
