Greetings from Connecicut, USA.

I am new to motorcycles but caught the bug fast and hard.

I have a CX500 prokect in full swing and know there will be more to come.

check me out on instagram here: www.brokefootphoto.com

Welcome to DTT I built a CX500 last winter in my Basement. I really like em, lots of resources here on what to look for etc to keep you from having problems down the road. CXman here aka Murray knows the bikes inside out and back to front and has proven performance mods.

Cheers

If you don't buy a set of Murray carbs for it, you are an idiot. Seriously. Waaay better powerband. Pulls strong from 2,500 rpm to well past redline. Careful, though, it will easily loft the front wheel when you hit second gear.

Here's one I did last year.

Here's a shot of one of the carbs. Note the custom tuned intake manifold.

I powdercoated the engine cases. The engine badge got powdercoated, too. Candy red and silver vein.

LOL I read that as "if you buy a set of murray's carbs......" then read it again cause that made no sense. They are on my to get when funds allow list for sure. In the meantime Murray(CXman) was great at helping me trouble shoot my stock carbs, Great guy.

Yes, he is a great guy, and his carb upgrades REALLY work. The bike I pictured dynoed at 59 hp at the rear wheel. Quite impressive for a shaft drive 500cc.

Yeah, something like that, and hp at the crankshaft is going to be substantially higher than hp at the rear wheel, especially with the added friction of the shaft drive. Stock, I doubt a CX500 would turn more than 35 hp at the rear wheel.

My thoughts exactly. Did you deck the heads at all to bump compression? I read your thread but can't remember. I believe you can take a few thou off without hurting to get a few HP. That with the modded pipes and Murray's carbs, you need to upgrade your brakes for sure LOL

No, we decided not to bump the compression. It's already something like 10.1:1. Didn't want to have to go to premium fuel. The guy that owns the bike is a daily rider. He rides it to work every day, (when the roads are clear of snow and ice, of course.) If we had to bump it up to premium fuel, his annual cost of ownership would go up quite a bit due to how much he rides.

Yes, the front brakes were updated. Tony, (the owner,) did the research. He got a caliper off of eBay that was dual piston. Required a different mounting bracket, too. I didn't do the research, so I don't know what combination of caliper and bracket it was. We rebuilt the caliper and the master cylinder. Bead blasted them while we had them apart, and powdercoated them. Also did braided brake lines.

Forks were updated with Progressive springs. Tried to install emulator valves, but the ones that Tony got didn't fit. Still, with the right preload, and 15 wt fork oil, the forks worked quite well.

The bike got a thousand other things, too. We pulled the triple trees, installed All Balls tapered roller bearing upgrade, and installed a grease zerk fitting in the stem. Powdercoated the triple trees, too.

The exhaust "H" pipe was removed, and we made them into true duals using Murray's pipe mod and glass pack megaphone "mufflers." I would like to try the Mac 2-into-1 pipe on one of these bikes sometime.
