bits needed on the cheap

Been Around the Block
Will start working on my cb500T in November, and will need parts for reasonably low prices...you see, the warden doesn't allow too much spending at once, so I'm pretty much on a $40-$60 a month budget for teh pieces I need...here's the short list of immediate needs

First and foremost, a electric start button/kill switch assembly...I found one online for $98, for a different year/model bike. I asked the owner of the site if it would fit my bike and he hasn't responded as of yet.

An extra fuel tank...well, not really the entire tank, just the bottom, with the mounting parts, etc...I'm planning on attempting a custom jobby, but woukld like to start with that so that I don 't need to make major measurements to be sure that it fits back on the bike...same with another seatpan, anything that would fit my bike that can be added to.

I'll also need other bits as well, the typical, bars (clubman or clip on) , mirrors )well, only the left one, right one is useless anyway with all the vibration.

So, if you see anything lying around that is getting in your way, and you dont' mind parting with it for cheap, please let me know.

Also...more valuable to me than ANY of the parts I'll need is all of your expert knowledge and advice...for instance...where do I start? To me, getting a sound engine, transmission, and suspension is tops...then I'll worry about seats, fuel tanks, etc...I first plan on taking off the front forks, cleaning them well, rebuilding or replacing what needs it, then setting them aside...I'll continue to do this until I have but a frame left...then I'll start rebuilding the entire bike with all of the rebuilt, replaced, repaitned, etc. parts...corking up to the tank, and seat last...after all, they are the easiest to take off, and probably the easiest to put back on as well, right?
 
heh....I'm in Pittsburgh, PA, USA....and I seem to be one of the only people around that are even remotely interested in Cafe style bikes....This is a Harley town, it seems...
 
Do not spend $100 on a switch assembly. You could buy a new one from Honda for that much.

If you just want to replace the stock unit, keep your eyes open at swap meets/eBay/wrecking yards for something similar or identical. Otherwise, you can get 'universal' sets on eBay that do pretty much everything your bike will need in one control pod.

See, this is the most valuable thing to me. My experience in motorcycle repair consists solely of repairing a '73 CB350....15 years ago, when OEM replacement parts were still actually available...Teh one I need for this 500T is discontinued, so I can't get it through Honda (tried)

i can honestly say that I had no idea that I could find a switch that does everything in one...THANK YOU!!!!

So, I could buy this SOB, attach it to a handlebar, and get rid of 2 assemblies?
 
Yep - think so anyhow. I have a Yamaha switch on my XS650 project that does everything I need it to do also (no electric starter).

It has turn signals, kill switch, horn button and headlight hi/low switch. Only thing missing is a starter button (which could be put anywhere on the bike).

This is the switch after I took it apart, cleaned it, polished the housing and sleeved the wires.
