So I needed to replace missing bolts that hold the sprocket/clutch cover on my CB350. The PO lost one (top left), and I jacked the other when I first removed it (bottom left). There's a bit more info in my build thread: http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=19800.msg546402#msg546402.
Problem is, the bolt that the PO left missing is, according to the diagrams, a 6M x 55. Those weren't available where I went (with limited time). In a pinch, I bought a 6M x 60 zinc plated. I hand tightened it, measured the space between the head and the cover (which was more than 5mm) and bought some washers to make up the gap until I could get the right bolt later on. When I went to screw it in, it grabbed for maybe a couple of turns then just spun. I pulled it out and there was a couple of mm of white stuff around the threads at the end.
For some reason, I thought it was probably just some gunk in the hole (after 20yrs with no bolt) or some old grease or loctite or something, so I removed a couple of washers until I could screw it in, it felt firm and there was no gap. Looking online for bolt measurements and such, I have seen that there's some danger of pushing compacted gunk hard enough to push out the back of the hole. I realize now I should have stuck with 5mm or more in washers and picked out the hole somehow if it didn't screw in to 55mm without too much fight. I don't remember it being TOO hard to get it tightened in the end, but I don't totally remember. I just had my little pack of tools I carry on the bike, and I tightened it with a small adjustable wrench at an odd angle.
As it stands now, there are likely a bit under 5mm (like ~4.5mm) worth of washers on there, but I'm worried that I could possibly have pushed it through, and/or that the white stuff was aluminum and I was stripping the hole. How likely do you think this is? How easy is it to push the back through? What's on the other side of that hole that could get damaged?
