Bought a bike in boxes... now what.

Been Around the Block
Usually I don't opt for basket cases, this was a special exception. Price was right. Picking up a 81 GS850G with 2 bikes worth of parts tomorrow. It's pretty dirty but the motor should be in tip top shape. With a new wiring harness, a years worth of cleaning parts and some carb cleaning I should have a decent runner.

So my question is, for those who have bought unfamiliar bikes in boxes. What is your strategy. I figured I'd catalog what I have, compare off of parts fiches, see what I'm missing and but her back section by section. Any other advice before I dig in?
 
that sounds like a plan, get the manual for all your torque spec's and how too's as well, and go for it.
 
Pick up some zip lock baggies and black marker and as you Sort thru parts put them in bag and label them . That way when your working on this part or that you can pull the right bag out with the right bolts , nuts , this or that ! Good luck on the build
 
CMSNL.COM!!!! I can't tell you how many times I've referenced this site to see the exploded view and figure out what's missing or what order washers, bushings etc go on. You can use their exploded view to get the part ID number so you can search for it easily. I started with zero knowledge building my first bike from a basket case last summer and it is the best resource I have had aside from these forums. Good luck on your build!
 
Great site. Most of the sites I was looking at, you couldn't read the expanded view. This site is wayyy better.

+1 for zip lock baggies and labeling. That was my method on my current build. I set up my frame, swingarm, triples first and then did a lot of staring at parts Fische, drinking beer and building it up. Once built up and running I tore down replaced parts rebuilt engine and began to rebuild again. Good luck on the build.

My plan was to make it a roller with engine mounted, then do all the cutting/welding work on the frame (detabbing, finalising location for rearsets, electrics tray etc), then build up to a runner, then tear down again, powder/paint etc and rebuild.
