Build-off rules?

So I was thinking about maybe within a year or so starting a build-off with my friend, and I thought "are there any rules that we should follow?", so I decided to search do the ton. I found nothing on here(if there is let me know, please), but customfighters.com did, but that was only for a one time event that they held. So my questions are: Does do the ton have build-off rules?, if not can we get some?, and would it be a good idea to actually have a new board(I'm not sure what they're called) added just for build-offs?
If we were to get serious about this, would there be things like classes? engine classes, builder classes, etc? budget limits? votes? how would a board be setup? Just something to think about, I hope I'm not sounding dumb, and I hope there isn't something on here already. If there is could you guys point me in the direction? Thanks

A limit on time and money? Rules on what is or is not acceptable as a cafe?

Takes all the fun out of it and opens up a can of worms for arguments. This forum might be a little too free-form to accommodate such a restrictive approach.

I'm interested in seeing what the rest of DTT thinks!

It's your build off with your friend and you can set whatever rules the pair of you agree to. Cost and time are probably the most important, but I'd stay away from specifying what makes it a Cafe or fighter or tracker or brat etc. Do it as a custom build. Total budget 2/3/4 grand including purchase of donor bike, closing date Oct 1, 2014 - or something like that that works for you both.
 
Professional builder vs. hobby builder?

A backyard mechanic competing against a pro with a milling machine/lathe/TIG equipment, etc would kill the buzz for sure.

We here at dotheton generally save our competitiveness for the drunken roshambo matches.
 
I thought our only real competitions were:

1) Who did the dumbest shit to their bike this month... I won for September with my front disc to drum conversion... and the drum works better than the stock disc set up did. :o

2) Who drinks the worst beer... me, nothing but PBR or cheaper unless somebody else is buying...

3) Who is going to post the photo that kills Uncle Ernie's Inspirational Pics thread...

Anything else trends towards fun and games, shits and giggles, or dead serious around here.
 
I would limit the amount of outsourcing that can be done. Most garage weekend warriors don't have welding equipment (at least I don't) so it's understandable if you have to outsource that, but make sure you can't just drop off your bike at a shop with a bunch of parts. Maybe set a monetary limit that can be spent on outside work. Or maybe only certain items can be outsourced.

And "built not bought" comes to mind. You might be working hard on fab work, beating in a tank, molding a seat, etc.. while your buddy just buys everything new. Take precautions against that if you want.

Also, what condition can the bike be bought in? Totally stock? There's way too many halfway built cafe racers out there. No fun if someone else already did half the work.

Other than just set an end date and maybe a budget and start building.
 
No easy bikes, so CB/CL with upright cylinders, and XS650s, are out. Other than that, get to cutting...
 
I'm not saying that we need rules or anything, I was just suggesting. But I still think it would be cool to at least have a topic board for build-offs. Pretty much what I meant for rules was different classes, so like let's say pro vs. pro, and newb vs. newb, and etc. I also think that a build-off between a pro and a weekend builder would be exciting if the weekend builder shows some promise, kinda like an underdog? Other things for classes could be divided up into companies, engine sizes, types of bikes, money and time restrictions, and etc. so that way it wouldn't take the fun out of it in my opinion. and other members would vote on who they think had the best build. Now that I've explained more what do you guys think?
 
Btw scruffy, are you an eagle scout? I'm almost done with mine. I actually worked on it just a little bit ago.
