Cam sp.... UPDATE: Differences in Honda Twin Camshafts from year to year...

Can't quite get over it!!!!!! FINALLY get the bike running well and she blows up on me!!! Glad i wasn't on the freeway/road.
Stoked to tear down the bottom end to find the bolt heads(sarcasm)....
Praying the valves are not damaged Any other advise for both top/bottom end bolts/parts that you guys would replace to prevent stuff like this from happening?
I really didn't think id have to do this kinda stuff with a "5500 mile" bike, but looks like ive gotta. Ive already replaced the cam chain/tensioner/guide/rollers, engine gaskets along with pistons, rings, pins, clips and all that jazz.

UPDATE: Can someone give me an idea of what year/model Camshafts I can use for a 69' cl350? For the life of me I cannot seem to find an oem resource to compare part numbers but i believe I have the cam rated to 10.5k rpm (looks beefier as shown in the link) . (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=558774) Plus, as far as i am aware, changing out the Cam would require changing out the rocker arms as well for specific years?

Did you put the right ones in the right holes and torque them properly?

It happened on my 1972 Honda CB350 after the bike had not ran for 19 years, i rebuilt it all, torqued those bolts and ignored the fact that this w the first time in 35 years that those had been un-torqued then re-torqued. Metal fatigue in those hardened bolts is not uncommon. replace everything critical.

my error was compounded by merely lapping the valves and not replaceing them too. after 2000 miles the exhaust valves disintegrated needing me to rebuildt the top end with new pistons, pins clips rings and cylinders.

Turns out the Valves are fine, the only damage so far is that cam cover case got a dime size hole punched into the bottom of it.( i was wonderin why the friggen case was leakin up there all of a sudden ) Lookin to finish up breakin the bottom end apart to finding the rest of the carnage.

After seeing a set of sprocket bolts back out on a friends bike, I always use loctite on them after thoroughly cleaning both threads. As the bolts back out they shear off on a surrounding surface. Might be the cause of the hole you mentioned. (just an idea. hard to see from this end)

Did you install the right ones in the right places? One bolt is shouldered, one is not and they belong in their own places.

(Ktriple) I would take a guess that your correct about them backing out. Apparently, blue loctite isn't strong enough!!! Another thing that I need to tackle is finding another bolt.

Now the big problem I'm going to have is finding another set. I stopped by my engine shop on the way home today and asked him about it, and he said he should have some High tensile strength bolts that should hold up. Anyone have any input?

According to Lordmoonpie, hes been racing his for 4 years with some replaced high tensile strength bolts and never looked back.

I think they are 8x1.00 though, not a common size
Personally I've never had one snap, the only time I have seen them fail was after multiple engine re-builds where I'm sure they were overtightened more than once

They both snapped cause one backed out and came around and slammed into the cam case and proceeded to f-things up. Turns out after a good look at her, one of the holes where the sprocket hitches onto the cam is ovalized and the threads leading into the cam are shot. Bummer of a find but I guess it could be worse...

My friend used high strength bolts. few thousand on it and no problems.

Loctite only works if both surfaces are completely degreased/clean
