Can someone explain these shock settings for me? Zephyr ZR750

I picked these up for dirt cheap because one has some rash on it. I'm using them on my XS650 project. They're '91 or '92 Kawasaki Zephyr 750 shocks.
Google fails me. I know what/how the spring pre-load ring thing works, but what about the knob at the top and the dial at the bottom? Can you give me a quick primer on adjusting these shocks?

That's your rebound and compression damping adjustment. Higher numbers mean stiffer damping.

Got this reply on the ZRX forum:

"Top knob is compression damping, bottom dial is rebound damping. Spring preload collar is the stepped chrome collar on top of the spring...

I would set both compression knobs to 1 or 2, and both rebound dials to 3 or 4 - chances are they are like the ZRX shocks."

I set them there and put the springs on the middle setting. I'll see how that feels once I get the bike running.
