K so here's the scoop. I have always had a love affair with 2 stroke engines and I've got a '75 cb 550 supersport that I've been building into a cafe racer. It is by no means stock anymore. But I recently had the idea to try toget my hands on an earlier CR 500 single cylinder 2 stroke engine. To put in the frame the engine is death on a stick for those who aren't familiar with that engine but I think it make my bike fly.so anyway my whole reason for posting this is to maybe get some input from all of ya and maybe if someones got an old cr engine laying around that there lookin to get rid of I am interested

Just pull voltage off the stator like an old school enduro for the headlight don't need a charging system. And what's your beef against 2 strokes? You just have to know how to ride to handle it. The whole point of me building this bike is so its a unique machine I don't want it to be a typical run of the mill cafe

Really? Look at the links on my page ::) and you need a lighting coil to run a head light. If it was a ez as putting a light on the front you would see more of it. You will need a stater there isnt one a reg/rec a battery and a lighting coil. If you built a good bike like a Yamaha yz or it or wr the coil is already there. and there is a stater on the shelf that will bolt on. But you decided to go with the piston holer. That Honda had to change every other year to keep together. My buddy has a cr he busted the clutch cover and it was 1 year only part 400 buck on ebay hahahaha I was tring to help look for a wr490 I think you'll thank me. The stater kit for a cr500 is 800 bucks by it self the motard guys run them. Not to mention the crazy cost of the motor itself.

Yeah that is a very good point about the up front cost of the motor, they ain't lookin to cheap. I had a 93 cr500 dirt bike and it was scary fast so I knew it was a fast engine which is why I think it would be cool. How do those rd 350 motors run in respect to power and reliability. I'd like a engine that will haul ass but like I said I like the 2 strokes

A well sorted cb550 engine makes about 10 more HP and the same lbft as a well sorted rd400 engine.

However...

A built RD with all the Banshee 350 go-fast parts will give something like 70hp. I've heard of even more, on grenade-ey engines.

you are on drugs a well sorted rd350 will distroy all but the best cb anythings. yamaha had a ad campain that played on this. Odds are you are just reading hipster fluffer sites and have never been around a hot rd. mine as it sits is in the 70hp range its not a useable bike anymore, its loud and violent and tries to throw you off it from start to finish. there is a purple 74 in my town that picks on modern 600's it stop lights. Honda built commuter bikes at best

By well sorted, I mean good condition stock configuration.

RD400 : claimed 40hp
CB550 : claimed 50hp

The near 75lb dry weight difference, in favor of the RD, and it's much more exciting powerband (as well as not trying to be a small 'all-rounder')are what makes it a cb550 killer.

Odds are you misread what I said and don't know much of anything about me.

I guess you just skipped over the part where I said "built RD with all the Banshee 350 go-fast parts will give something like 70hp." Here, I'll link it for you. http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=54709.msg618423#msg618423

That said, I know, personally, of a cb550 sitting at well over 70RWHP that is completely streetable.

By the way, the advertisement is too small to read.

Google will turn that picture up with a three second search
and as far as your claims of a fast cb550.you know that look that a regular person gives to a loon that says they were abducted by aliens. thats how im looking at my phone. ive built a 550 motor and had some great og 4stroke mc drag guys oversee the build. What a waste of money high end parts and machine work. it like dropping a hundred buck on a meal befor the prom and having your date get a panic attack ( ::)) half way through the night. what that joke about a cb and a tampon having in common
every pussy needs one

It's true that Pauls cb550 took about a million times more work than a 70hp rd350, without doubt.

What picture?

I don't own any more CB's, but that doesn't mean I think they aren't good machines.

/edit: oh, the advertisement. Don't care enough to spend the time.

PS I've removed about half the posts in this train wreck. Please keep it a bit more civil next time. Disagreement happens and tend to draw out additional knowledge and makes for interesting conversation, we get that, but the personal attacks aren't helping anyone.
