CB/CL 175 Exhaust pipe header gaskets

Coast to Coast
Hi!
My CB/CL 175 engine rebuild gasket kit came with exhaust pipe header gaskets (where the exhaust pipe fits into the cylinder head exhaust port) made from some sort of woven material (glass fiber? ceramic? asbestos?) held together with wire - not the copper gaskets that were originally in the head. The fiber gaskets look pretty flimsy and fragile to me.
I saw listings on ebay among others for the rigid copper gaskets, but before I order them, has anyone used the fiber-type gasket and do they seal okay?
Or, is there an even better gasket to use?
Thanks,
Pat

Are you sure it is a fiber material, and not a stamped metal (lead or aluminum)? I have seen some that were basically what looked like a sandwich. Aluminum "bread" and leaded fiber "meat". The copper ones work well too as long as the studs have enough thread on them. Typically the copper gaskets are thinner and sometimes the nut can bottom-out before the proper seal is made. Either way, any of these gaskets should only be one time use, as they crush to the imperfections of the head and header.
