cb100 bucket racer

Hi guys, just wanting to know a heap of information that is very hard to find. As the thread suggests I am wanting to make a bucket racer. Engine wise I have a cb100 and sl125 engine. I have read that the cb has more go than the sl. Is this correct and if so why. My thoughts are to fit an xl125 two piece head on one of the engines. I think it has bigger valves and a bigger cam. This should equal more go. Carby wise I have the original and several other carbines from mini motard racing. But I do have a special mikuni 26mm carb (not ebay junk). Which way should I go with carbs? This should get the ball rolling. More questions to come.

what's a bucket racer?

I know "Bracket Racer" but never heard the term bucket racer.

Bucket racers is a term used in OZ and NZ for old school low cc modified racing bikes. The comp is called super lites now but it is commonly called bucket racing. Been mini motard racing for years and want to step upto bucket racing. Mini motard racing is quite advanced with roller rocker heads and even four valve heads. We have Daytona switchable ignitions and other race dedicated parts that bolt straight on for added performance.

Was just wanting to get the right engine setup for bucket racing so that I could spend my money in the right direction. Basically I am wanting to build a hot cb100 engine or sl125 to start with. Just not sure which engine could produce the best performance with the right amount of work.

There should be some pertinent info in here for you

Thanks for the info. Does anyone know why these bikes hate pod filters. Was going to bolt on my 26mm mikuni, but having second thoughts now.

Will just stick with The 122cc with the xl125 head. Will give it a port (match the intakes and exhaust for better flow) and maybe see what lighter parts I can find for the head. Valve spring retainers and springs will be the first thing.

The next step will be to setup the gearing.

You could do a search on this forum to find out the downside of pods, but you probably won't have to. There is almost guaranteed to be an avalanche of opinion and advice triggered by this seemingly innocuous question.

Crazy

Just bear in mind those little emgo pods have very little surface area. The K&N or UNI type filters have more area and better flow. The Emgo's also tend to block inlet vents on the carb....

Will bolt the k&n filter on. Just have to get the 26mm intake manifold adaptor.

Can anyone tell me why the sl125 is knocked for its straight line speed.

I would assume the gearing is the issue? As gas as I know it's the same engine wise as the cb125?

This is all great info. Will do search on gearbox ratios. Might have to transfer gearboxes or have a play with gear ratios between the two engines.

Will not start spannering until I have a game plan. Good thing these engines are basic to work on. Will have to go old school and lube my gaskets so that I can pull the engine apart for trial and error.

I'm told the Cb100 can take a CB750 sleeve and piston for a quick and dirty bore kit, or sleeve and piston off of an 836 kit. Then use the crank and head off the sl125 and you should be set.

After much searching and good luck I have found that people are building bucket racers out of xr200r engines. For bucket racing 160cc is max size. Unfortunately people do not elaborate on exactly what they do to down size the engine.

Instead of building a hand grenade (maxing a sl125 engine), this down size in cc of the 200 engine should be able to handle the load and be more reliable. It also has the benefit of six gears opposed to five. I think people put a 125cc barrel on it. Not sure how they sort it out (rod length is different). Any info is much appreciated, I will even consider fabricated lies and a little bit of BS.

Does anyone know the dimensions of the xl185/xr200r bore. Might be a cheaper option to bolt one of these on, are they the same length as the sl125 bore?

Will the crank and Conrod from the xl185/xr200r fit in the sl125. This is another option.

Next will be the debate about horsepower vs torque.

I can not find anything on the net regarding camshaft for 1 piece heads. Does anyone know if they are different or all the same.
