CB175 warm idle issue

Hey all,

Hoping to get some valuable input here, as I am at a loss. 1971 cb175, good compression, probe digital ignition, mikuni vm20 carbs, idles and runs great when cold. Perfectly steady 1200 rpms. Continues to run well when warm, but the idle hunts a 700 rpm range (1500-2200), and the bike will stall if I do not add throttle. Very hard to reproduce the issue when just sitting, happens often while riding.

Because I know someone will ask, exhaust is aftermarket, length is just short of rear axle, and intake is a pod, but, not what you'd expect. I used a piece of turbo hose with stainless couplers to create a substantial volume of air between the filter and carb. The volume if anything is more than the old air box. Also the size of the filter is much larger that a normal pod, similar area for air to pass through. I read a lot of these common issues in other people's builds, made sure to avoid them, and I know math is your friend :D.

First thing I did was play with the carbs. Adjusted the air screw and found it was too rich. After adjustment the throttle response is substantially better, but the same issue is there. Apparently I fixed an issue I didn't know I had though ???. Tried raising the idle for shits and giggles, no joy.

This is my first carburated engine, always had fuel injection, so I am at a loss. A buddy of mine suggested a valve clearance issue, which could be because I never checked them. I've never adjusted valves before so if someone would be able to point me in the right direction as to a tutorial to make sure I'm doing it right that'd be great.

also any, and I am mean any ideas would be appreciated.

Some further info. Checked the timing after adjusting the cam chain tensioner which was loose, and it was slightly too advanced. Corrected it, then had to adjust the idle timing on the probe unit. Also check my air filters and they were soaked in gas, don't know why. Carbs have no issues and petcock was rebuilt. The bike will hunt for an idle no matter what I seem to do. Only thing I didn't check at this point is the coil which is brand new.

How did you adjust the idle timing on the probe unit? I thought it came set where you didn't have to mess with it...?

I think it's steps 60 and 61 in the directions. After you check the timing at 3500 and it falls in between the advance marks, let it back down to 11-1200 and put the light back on it. Mine, was too advanced of the idle mark. By flipping all 3 switches up you enter the adjustment mode. To the right of the three switches there are 2 press buttons. The left pulls timing, the right adds. I had to click the retard 4 times to get the idle timing sorted. When you are done you put all the switches down.

Huzzah! That could help.

Btw if you need to play with your timing let me know, I'll send you my pumpkin cut stator cover to borrow so you don't make a mess :o

I play with the timing a lot but I usually drain the oil down out the stator and fire it up low oil. I have a spare cover that I want to cut. Mind just sending a pic of where you made the cut?

Sorry to thread jack ... Hope someone responds with a better answer :(

Ahh I see. Np! I cut the upper left quadrant out, including the screw hole. works like a charm. Thank you, I really have no clue at this point since as far as I know I have checked everything out and nothing is showing as a problem. I even emailed probe just now asking if there is anything I am not thinking of in regards to ignition. I feel like that could be the problem, since when the bike is 'hunting for idle' (which is now between 1000-1700rpm) it sort of feels like perhaps the 'little black box' is pulling and adding timing to find a good idle, even though I don't know if that's actually possible. The bitch of it is I cannot get it to do it just idling at home, I have to be riding, so troubleshooting is a bitch.

Well the issue got worse and now it's time to pull out the wallet. The head gasket is blown, and who know what else once I open it up. Compression hot is only 130. I already have all the gaskets, and a new set of pistons, rings, and pins for a 1 mm overbore. Now I'm just wondering if the vales are good should a do a overhaul with kpmi stuff anyway? I want to do this once and only once.

Welcome to the circus my friend!! It's a good thing though because the cam comes out of the 175 easily. There's after link on the chain.
