So I got my bike all back together and low and behold my bike actually started. It runs like shit, but it actually runs.
I did some searching on how to tune up carbs. The consensus is that you should try and get one cylinder running at a time. Well, I have the bike running well and proceed to unplug one of the plugs and the motor immediately dies. I tried the other side and the same thing happens. I tried starting motor with only one plug wire connected and it won't even start. Any thoughts?

i think they meant tune 1 side at a time. just take your time read the manual and make small adjustments then wait a few minutes, somtimes i blip the throttle see what happen and more adjusting.im far from expert on carb theary but it works for me .

Provided sync is OK, you can dial in the fuel/air mix one cylinder at a time by pulling the plug from the side with which you are not currently working. You will need to dial up the idle though. You lower the idle back down after you have each cylinder running at the same RPM on its own.

so should I take it to mean that my sync is not OK? When I try to pull the plug on either side, it will die.

Not necessarily. On most twins, it's necessary to increase the idle speed on each side to let it run only on one side. To me that rather defeats the objective. I tend to synch teh slides with two lenths of wire (coat hangers are a good source of suitable material) When they both open together, that's mechanically synched. Then I adjust both air screws and throttle stop (idle speed) screws the same and run it. Then I adjust the the mixture (air) screws one at a time and listen for changes and I end up with a final tweak on the speed screws.

Just curious, did you have the carbs apart? are they clean? dont attempt a final tune if they need a clean/rebuild. If they are recently rebuilt, "bench sync" them i.e. eyeball it or use two lengths of metal rod, as mentioned. I open the throttle all the way open and make sure they open past the carb body at the same time. Then i vac test them. It should run fairly well if this is done
