CB200 Rebuild - Carb Question

Hello,

For the past few weeks I have been rebuilding a Honda cb200 engine. This is my first rebuild so im very much an amateur. I have installed the engine and it starts and idles nicely. My only problem is that it wont start with the choke on but does start with the choke closed and a bit of throttle.

This has me scratching my head because surely the engine should be getting a richer fuel mixture with the choke on. I pulled the carb bowl off and sprayed so carb cleaner down the idle jet and it is clear. I have also set the idle mixture screw according to the manual (1 1/4 turns back after it seats).

Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.

My cb200 was VERY hard to start with the choke on, it's really not that big of a deal. Once you get everything adjusted and carbs fully cleaned, I bet you won't have to give it gas to crank it either. The choke shouldn't really need to be used unless it's cold outside anyways

First off, nice job on cleaning up the engine, looks great.

Your description is a bit confusing though, since you mention the 'choke on' and 'choke closed' as being two different settings. To close the choke on these bikes you raise the lever, and lower it to open it. Which setting are you using to try and start it when cold?

Thank you both. Yeh sorry thats my mistake. When im starting the engine cold the choke lever is down (open) and it starts up fine. It wont start with the lever up (closed).

That makes more sense in terms of your description, but if the bike starts and runs fine, you're not describing much of a problem! You're gonna want to worry if the bike doesn't start with the choke on or off.
