Did some soda blasting today.

Honestly, the results were not worth the cleanup. Next time I'll be doing it in the actual yard (not the porch) and I'll be finding a way to hang the engine other than just having it in the frame. I'll paint this thing soon...

It was still fun

Plan on blasting my frame soon.

Some more mock-up with tires on. Next up is painting this damn frame. Then it's assembly time. Hoping I don't run into any clearance issues with the tire. I'll throw sprocket and chain on to see when I get the chance.

The tank is a little bit of an issue because the petcock hits the valve cover. I'll be switching that out for a low profile, 90 degree petcock and hopefully that should do the trick.

The stator cover is going to lose the paint and get polished again, I don't like it black.

It's nice that it looks like a bike now, at least. A little bit of motivation.

Good news! Someone contacted me through facebook and gave me my 520 chain conversion kit. It had been delivered to the wrong address.

Finally got fork seals replaced. Had some serious trouble with one seal. I even ended up burning the rubber out with a propane torch in order to remove it.

While the sliders were off I took the opportunity to wire wheel them.

The frame has been stripped and is prepped for blasting. I've decided not to powdercoat and just paint it myself for financial reasons.

I should have done this the first week I had the bike, when the frame was already bare, but y'all know how it is.

Also, how do y'all feel about painting assembled engines? I have it all sealed up from soda blasting and I was thinking about painting it as well.

That's awesome! Your bike is coming together nicely. I'm in a stall at the moment and can only wish I was as far along as you. Great job!

I would think you'd be OK on the painting as long as everything is really sealed up.

My mentality is that if I just do SOMETHING every day, even if it's just wire wheeling a part or preemptively spraying some liquid wrench on some stubborn bolts, the bike will eventually get done. Very slowly, but it keeps me from feeling stuck.

Don't forget to holler if you need any parts or anything. I have like three spare rims and a couple extra hubs, an engine, carbs, etc...
I'll be updating my ad in the SELLING section as soon as I can get pictures of everything.

Haha yes, but it was a totally understandable mistake. My default address on Paypal was for my old condo, so that's where it ended up! No worries, brother. You weren't kidding about it being like new, and I love the gold.

I'm probably going to replace wheel bearings (the stem bearings feel perfect, don't understand the necessity for the "tapered" upgrade)

Should I replace them? The bike only had 3000 miles on it and hasn't been ridden since 1980... The bearings seem okay, good enough to spin well on a truing stand.

Mine had just over 2000 miles on them.
I didnt replace my steering stem bearings, simply disassembled, cleaned and re-greased. Using Impact grease, made for Low/No rpm, it withstands high impact, its the thickest, stickiest grease I have ever worked with. Perfect for stem bearings.
However, I did replace the wheel bearings, w sealed All Balls from DCC, even though the old ones spun fine, once I got em opened up Im glad I did. The ancient grease was all chunky and nasty & full of dirt. They are not sealed bearings. So, anything that gets in there gets to them, water, dirt...I could've cleaned them up and repacked them but new, fresh sealed bearings aren't very expensive.
Some guys have trouble getting them out, Luckily, mine went fine and it turned out to be a fun little project.

Yea repacking stem bearings was one of the first things I did, and they feel perfectly smooth. I'll probably make the change to that heavy grease as well now that I have the bearings out again.

One issue I'm having is with the bearing retainer. I've drilled the punches out, but the thing won't budge. Won't have time to work on it until Monday, so I guess I'll just coat it in liquid wrench and wait till then.
It's not reverse threaded is it?

We're back down to the frame and prepping for paint. This has been what's stopped me from proceeding with total reassembly, so I'm excited to get it out of the way.

Nice work! Thanks for the offer on parts. I might need something at some point for sure. I'll give you a shout when I do.

The bearing retainer on my hub was a complete nightmare. I seem to remember when searching for how to remove the retainer I saw reverse thread somewhere. Please be very careful. I ruined a collar in the hub assembly. It's item 11 in the view below. I used heat to free up the bearings but still destroyed item 11(collar b) trying to extract it.

They don't make this part anymore and I had to buy an entire hub to replace it. Just a heads up.

To remove the retainer I made a tool using a piece of metal and drill bits. If you don't already have tool, I strongly suggest buying one similar to the pictured below...

Yes soaking it in penetrant for a couple days is the best. I simply put a couple drill bits into 2 of the opposing holes and use a piece of pipe or whatever I had laying around.
I dont remember them being left handed.
