CB360 Mikuni 32 VM tuning

All the shop manuals used to be like that in the sixties and seventies.

LOL. I have an awesome 1973ish Clymer CB750K book that is so frigging detailed with photos and info it's awesome. But I think Honda got a hold of them and some how put a kiboosh on all the detailing, because my mid 80s book of the same is nowhere near the detail.

Anyway, I'm ordering a set of #175 P-5s, if Sudco has them. I'll find out later today.

Not sure how Andoor is running #159 P-0s on his CB360. From what I have seen the set up for a 360 with VM30s is with a P-4 or P-5 N/J

P-5 159 is what comes stock in the VM30. It is way to rich for a 360.

Ok. Through all my searching on info on my VM32s and my CJ360 I came across a guy with a CB360 that was running this set up on VM30s and was happy;
Pilot #25
Main #200
Needle Jet P-5
Needle 6F4

Just info, not questioning you. I don't have that level of knowledge with these carbs, yet.
Makes me think though, that I ordered too big with the #175 P-5.

159 P-5 will flow something like a P-0 or O-8 - at least in that sort of range. In crude terms think of it as liquid passing through a 159 and froth in a 175. It's not quite that dramatic, but it gives you some idea of what we're dealing with.

So, Teazer-
If I was able to get a set of VM28s off an RD400 would it be better? Worth my money, time and effort? A friend of a friend has a set. I have not seen them yet. Is there only specific years to take from(I know you mentioned C & D)? Then what would I need, besides cleaning and such, to set them up? ie emulsion tubes and such? Obvious you can't answer to sizes that are in them, just the type needed.

I feel that they would be good to try on a street bike if you can make them mount up OK. I suspect that the intake ports will be a little large, so that could be an issue in terms of good gas flow, but maybe not. If you can get them cheaply enough it's certainly worth trying.

I found this blog where a guy mentions trying to get VM32s to work on his 360:

http://ryancarden.com/?p=319

Basic gist:

Pilot jet from 35 to 30 and main jet from 190 to 150.

I've fitted them to 391cc motor around 1990
I made some reducers to fit intake port but it didn't seem to make any difference.
I also shrunk fit some tube onto the carb to use stock Honda manifolds (freeze carb body, heat tube, no leaks, no 'glue or sealer)
Carb body is MUCH smaller than Honda intake manifold

That's my split personality.
Notice the Ryan guy never answers the question of what Needle Jet he is using.

Well, tried to get #175 from Sudco but they tell me that they are not designed to go in the VM32 but is for the TM28 and VM28 carburetors.
So........ Guess I'll buy a set of 159 P-5s and see where that gets me. Sudco's set up on the VM32s for CB360s is 185 mains, 35 pilots, 159 series P-5 needle jets, 6DH7 jet needles, 2.0 air jets, per Sudco Rep.

People tell me a lot of things won't work.............. I'll try to post a picture of a few different needle jets later this weekend.

Sudco don't list a Bleed type N'J for 32mm spigot mounts, but it doesn't mean it can't be done. That's probably why I have piles of brass here - buy it to see what fits and what doesn't and why.

As I said pages ago, I'm using XS650 emulsion tubes in VM32's
The jets are different, you use large round head instead of hex head (the thread is also slightly different pitch)
I lost confidence in SUDCO years ago when they started selling 'proprietary' jetted VM32's that just plain didn't work until re-jetted

On XS, the slide is about 1/3 open all the time, it doesn't bottom out, carb body is machined to keep it open
On VM, when slide closes, the needle pretty much fills the needle jet.
I don't remember which needle I used though, original was too long and bottomed on the main jet
I think the emulsion tubes sit slightly high, the flange is slightly thicker.(probably 0.010"~0.015")
I know I have several primary choke needle jets sitting in a box, I've swapped them out several times on different bikes
T250 left carb works real well on XL/XR185 ;D

Your selection of parts sounds much the same as mine. Lots of parts can be re-purposed.
