found this today, will be running down to grab it asap, unless it's seriously screwed up...

I will be simply flipping this one, I'm planning on tossing on an alloy seat, alloy tank, stainless 2-2 exhaust, alloy fender and my clipons... I figure my cost should be low and time will be quick since it's not going to be a frame up build... so excited!!!

Re: flip bike

man,
let me know if you are'nt going down to get it.
looks like a nice bike. any way let me know what your doing if you don't, i will..
later.

Re: flip bike

kickass! got it, actually got a better price, just asked what the "bo" would be and he said $250. i am a lucky boy today!! the oil smells like gas, the wiring is 'modified', there's a bunch of rust here or there, the brakes need work, but with some tlc this will be a killer ride (though I'm not going to touch it until the 750 is done)!!!

the ammo boxes are gone now, naturally...

it's weird too, not sure what's going on, but i ordered my clymer for that bike, so i'll figure it out soon. the bike kicks the engine over only when in gear, but moves the wheel too. and when i jumped the starter, it just whined, like it was spinning without engaging the pistons... checked out the starter chain and everything is good there, so... anyone know about 360s?

My 350 starter does the same thing. I believe there is some internal gearing in the starter. My PO removed the gears so the starter motor spins but it never gets to the output shaft.

replace the springs and collets that are in the starting gear underneath the flywheel. You will have to take the flywheel and the starting gear off to do this, but it is quite easy. The springs look like ballpoint pen springs, and the collets are short little metal tubes. There should be three of each in the starting gear. the springs wear out over time and bind on themselves, and the collets tend to get worn out. I had this same problem on my cb450, and this fix cured it. The parts are readily available and cheap

Sorry about the hijack Rockcity.

Are you talking about in the motorcycle engine or the starter motor itself? My defect is in the starter motor.

Thanks, CC

Re: flip bike

well it seems like the starter clutch is schizophrenic, when i had it all together, i'd pull in the clutch and short the solenoid and the thing would just whine and move nothing. when I took the left cover off, the starter chain and clutch appeared intact and the motor would pull against the crank when i shorted the solenoid... of course by that time i had the clutch cover off and couldn't engage the clutch. I'm cleaning out the clutch mechanism right now and will reinstall it and check again... I think (don't have the clymers yet) that there's another connection in the clutch basket case (lol) that is not engaged

The starter on my 360 does the same thing, it spins, but only engages the engine every now and then. I've been looking to get a replacement starter, hoping that'll fix the problem.

also... i took another crack at the starter today and took the chain off to see if it was the motor or the clutch, and sure enough the clutch spins in either direction, so now i gotta get a bolt to get that magnet off so i can have a look at the clutch, maybe it's something i can machine a replacement for... i'm trying not to go nuts getting this one back in shape

i want them for my 350 bobber project, going to hide my battery in one and the other for some storage (my girl will want to ride it and with jockey shift i do not want her to have a purse around her neck while shifting)

If it is the same as the 350, the back axle removes it. Remove the rotor bolt, screw the axle in, put something through the cross hole in the unthreaded end of the axle, give it a wack and the rotor should be in your hand. It is on a tapered shaft so it will be tight on the shaft.

cool, i was just going to grab a 16mm bolt, i'm trying as hard as i can to keep the bike rideable! no more room in the shop haha

I think you should ditch the starter and all that other crap. Then just machine up a cover where the starter used to be and call it a day. My 360 starts first kick; no need for a starter!

Agreed. No magic button needed....

the same thing was wrong with my 500t when I first bought it. Seemed one of the little treaded bolt pieces had been evicted from the starter clutch and decided to lodge itself between the stator and rotor. It was ridable but the batt. wouldn't charge obviously.

Removed the starter and all additional wires it needed.
Plugged the hole.
Removed starter clutch chain.
Done.

I had the exact same problem with my 175 when I first bought it. I checked the planetary gears: Fine. Starter motor: Fine.

Took off the left case cover and used an axle bolt and a deadblow hammer to remove the starter clutch. I found out that there was about 0.25" of play from the back of the clutch to the motor - just enough to spin freely, but not enough to engage. I modded a little shim to put behind the starter clutch, and it engaged fine after that. Then, a second problem: The bearings in the starter clutch were engaging, but grinding down to a pulp every time the engine turned. Enough to grind them down enough to where there was no catch at all. I finally threw in the towel and swapped the motor out for $50.

This isn't the first time I've heard of problems like this. Must be a reason why people toss the starter motor other than weight and aesthetics... Maybe just a bad design with the starter clutch and the gears engaging? Interested to see what you find out. Good luck!

yeah... pulled the thing apart and the clutch suicided itself pretty good, the springs that push the little cylinders out to engage the clutch were gone, and the outer housing was dented where the springs go, so... looks catastrophic... I'm thinking about getting rid of it, but I think maybe tuning would be easier if i can get the engine started with a button... I guess i'll see how much the replacement parts will cost, then decide.. there's no way in hell i'll be able to repair that thing
