CB400F Engine Rebuild Cost Estimate

I've got a 77 CB400F which has 24k miles and is in quite good shape. I'm doing a cafe / restomod build on it and was thinking of having the engine torn down, checked, and balanced/rebuilt with the possibility of increasing the displacement.

So I don't get ripped off, any of you want to comment on how much I should expect to pay someone for labor (rough ball park figure). The bike was essentially babied its whole life so there are no rusty bolts or parts that I can see. Thanks.

Rings, gaskets, seals, valve job, cylinder honed or bored, cam chain. You'll be in for a pretty penny. I just finished rebuilding a 450 for a customer today. He sent all the goods along with it. Charged him $500, but, he just needed the cylinders honed, and valves lapped. Had I had to put them on the valve grinder, or bore cylinders, it would have been substantially more. Some charge more, some charge less.

Thanks for the heads up.

Some guy today said 4-5k which I thought was absurd. He also claimed that if I thought it was gonna be $1500 that I was very mistaken. I was figuring $1-2k myself

That's a bit excessive, IMO, for a job that can be done in half a day. But, that's just me. Takes no time to hone, install new rings, do a valve job, etc. Maybe I need to start charging more.

A quick hone and rings and valve lap and seals

is a long way from what you started out at

balancing a engine is a complete tear down and then the reciprocating mass sent out ect ect i pay up to 500 to have this done

the balancing metal if needed is insanely expensive and is often needed in stroker motors

so you can spend for a basic dust and clean at 500 all the way to empty your wallet

the main point here is make sure you are getting different suppliers to quote you on the same job
