CB450 carb leak

Got a question for anyone who knows more than I do.

I've got a 1973 CB450 that's been running alright, until yesterday I putted out and looked down to see gas coming out of the overflow tube from the left side carb pretty heavily. I figured the pin might have been stuck open, but after opening the carb I can see that the needle is moving freely.

This is about as much knowledge as I have of carburetors unfortunately, and I was wondering if there was anything else I should be looking at inside the carb that would be causing this problem. As far as I can tell the gas isn't leaking from the carb itself, although it might be, slightly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Probably still the float needle. It doesn't matter how easy it moves, if it doesn't close, and all it takes is to stay open a hair. I recently had the same issue, took the carb's apart several times and couldn't find anything. Walked across the street to a guy that is a motorcycle mechanic and he tells me needles. I bought a set and haven't had an issue since.

Could also be a simple case of a float being out of adjustment or stuck. Take it apart and clean it up. Set float height as per your manual. If that doesn't fix it... Needles are the next step.

I'm sorry, you are absolutely correct, do the easy stuff first before you spend $$.

I bet your float is full of gas. Take it off and shake it. If you hear gas in it, you need to resolder it or replace it.

And here's how to solder a float:

+1. You will most likely not have to buy any parts, just repair and clean the ones there. Like Von said though, some of those parts are pretty delicate. You don't want to bend or damage the needle also do not use drill bits to clean any passages in the carbs including jets. Use the proper tools.
