Cb450 oil pump modification?

Coast to Coast
I've talked to m3 racing and he suggest that I mod my oil pump.

Get the piston machined so I can fit a tight o-ring un there to make the oil pump more efficient.

What do you guys think about that?

putting an o ring on the oil pump piston? seems like a bad idea as it would likely wear out really damn fast... if the clearance between the piston and cylinder is small, there isn't much oil at all leaking past it. what problem are you trying to address here?

They just proposed me to make the pump more efficient... Now I'm inquiring about this here.

are you racing it?

No but I'd love to take it to the track here and there. ;-) but no... Not really.

But Cafe racers are also about modification and improvement right?

yeah, but I doubt there's the need, as far as I know, stock honda 450's weren't blowing up because of lack of oil, I wouldn't modify it just for the sake of it

Joe stock oil pumps work just fine unless you change out to a tricoid/gear type pump. Which requires a whole nuther can of worms to be opened.

Run down brand new pump if you can find one and run that. These engines just need a good flow of oil not tons of pressure.

These engines as such are designed to run at high rpms for long periods of time.

The guys racing CB450s had some wild oiling mods.
They ran lines right to the "rocker" boxes.

No real reason for a street bike

They are suggesting fitting a "piston ring" to reduce the amount of oil that get's left behind when there's too much clearance between the piston and bore (of the pump). It runs in oil after all, so it might work. I'd be tempted to measure the pump body and piston and see if it's possible to bore the body out by 1-2mm and get a new piston (plunger ) machined to match it.
