Cb450 remove the tachometer gear?

Coast to Coast
I don't use the stock mechanical tachometer gear on my cb450.

Can I just remove the tachometer gear on the cam or will it cause trouble?

Yes you can - but you need to plug the hole where the cable goes in or you'll lose all your oil.

OK but any advantage of doing that?

I think it would just depend on how much of a stickler you are for losing weight on the bike, because taking it out would get the weight of those small parts back. Which isn't much but I've never weighed them so who knows.

I believe CrazyPJ sells a plug that fits right into the current hole for the tach cable that just covers over the drive and the hole. I would do some sort of plug even if you leave the drive in place, just to help keep dirt and moisture out of the engine.

Thanks.

I was thinking about weight that the engine has to turn not much about "weight that the hole motorcycle has to carry".

Would this remove a little load on the engine?

If its not spinning a tach it's just freewheeling inside that cover, again negligible loss of power if you could measure it at all.

I'd leave it be, its not hurting anything and you may want to have the use of a tach at times, say for tuneups and such, like every 1000 miles.

OK thanks I'll just put a acorn nut over the cable end of the tachometer.

I'm just saying but. If I remove the tacho drive, would the cable end of the tacho be a great place to plug an oil gauge to see the oil pressure?

Lol there is hardly any oil pressure in these engines due to the style of crank bearings they have. MAYBE 10-15 PSI tops.

The actual test is to get the engine running and crack one of the center acorn nuts that hold the head down on the right side and see if oil creeps out. IF it does after say 40 seconds of running you have oil pressure.

You have a copy of the actual honda shop manual right joe? not the shitty clymer?

Yep I have a copy of the Honda manual.

Hardly refer to it... :-( I should.

You mean the acorn head bold? The ones on the right size where seals are on the cylinders?

Re: Cb450 remove the tachometer gear?

Yes that be the one I'd post a pic but I'm not at my computer right now. Procedure is shown in the shop manual that's why I asked.

I think you may be able to take out part #4, but not part #3. Part #3 has holes in it that control the oil flow volume into the exhaust cam. Then if you take out #4, you have to figure out how to seal the hole.

I left the parts in there and just put a black rubber cap over the attachment. The thread is a weird size so it may be difficult to find an acorn nut that actually fits.
