cb500? or cb750?

brycegp - Rock Store pic? Friend of mine was just out that way on his GL1000 (Paul Dutra - Back Alley Motorcycles) and has a pic in the same spot.

yeah right now I'm still kind of dangling in the middle. I have a 71' CB 500 that I can buy anytime for $500 or I'd have to craigslist a 750, so I might go with the 500 because of convenience

Hell, I think that's a good price even if it isn't running (probably need a carb clean and battery?)
BTW, I have taken my 360 on I-4, it's fine at 60~75mph but I only had a 20 mile trip to work (and 20 miles home ;D )

YUP... Go eye!

i have a 550 with racing cam and 2nd oversized pistons. Runs 185 kilometer/hour max. dunno in miles.
750 is better on the highway, due to being heavier (stable) and the 200cc extra keeps te revs down.
550 is better overall, due to power/weight ratio being far superiour than the 750

i have had a 750 and own a 550 right now. Love the 550, while the 750 was, well.. say ok. All the weight makes you sweat in tight corners capice?
Ohw - 500 tends to have a tough clutch with the "thru the ingene" axle. a 550 clutch cover fits a 500 and make the clutch buttersmooth.

owned a lot (more then 25) bikes but the '76 550 wins for me. Only bike i liked more was my XRV750 rdo4 wich i parked against a dumb ho with no lights on a bicyle at 140km/h at 3 in the morning.

get the 500 and have fun. That 750 looks like a mongrel that belonged to a dysfunctional family if you'll pardon me being so direct.

I'd like a cb500 but my buddy said I might as well get a 750 or I'll be wanting one like 2 months after I get a 500.
That's retarded. The only time I've felt the need for more power on my 500 was when I had it loaded down and 2-up crossing the rockies. Other than that it's great. It'll do 70 down the highway all day long. It'll rock through the corners all day long and I imagine mine could spank a 750 in the corners.
Yes, the 550 has an improved clutch/shifting mechanism but I wouldn't be afraid of the 500s. They're wonderful bikes and a well maintained clutch helps a lot. The CB500 has a real nice power and weight balance that feels so right. The 750 is a powerful pig of a bike. It's wider and quite a bit heavier than the 500. Not that I dislike the 750, I just prefer the nimbler, more refined 500.
In the reality of everyday riding you won't go wrong with either bike, but you'll never regret getting the 500!

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I've got a relevant question here.

I just picked up a 71 CB500 that's been sitting since 89 for $500. It's in mostly complete and decent condition, the engine kicks over, but I haven't tried to start it up yet. The kid I bought it from said he rebuilt the top end and carbs about 12-18 months ago.

I'm missing the side covers, clutch lever, keys and title - but am working on those now. Otherwise it's pretty unmolested for the most part.

The question is, should I keep this bike and cafe it up or should I trade in for a CB750. I'm 6'2" and 200lbs, so I worry that it's a bit small for me. But when I look out at the bike… I'm kind of itching to start cleaning her up. I will not be using it as a daily driver, just as a fun ride a couple of times a week. Also, I'm in San Diego, so freeway driving is going to happen, though I imagine I'll be doing a bit of open roads in the east part of the county when I make the time to ride it.

Would love to hear from you experts on whether I should dump time, TLC and money into this bike or just go for a 750 instead. Thanks for reading.

I would definitely go for a 750 over a 500.

There are a LOT more original parts and aftermarket parts for the 750 and it's just bigger and more powerful as well.

No question for me.

yeah...I'm 5'8", 175lbs...and my cb500 was fun. But I wouldn't have wanted to be any bigger on that thing though. The cb500 is a great bike, no doubt.

I'm on a cb750 now though and its better...from a size perspective.

Depends on how you intend to use it.
If you have a bunch of twisty roads to ride on, modified 500/550 will run away and hide from a 750 (if your a half decent rider)
If it's almost all longish straights, 750 will be more comfortable, it doesn't have a lot more power than 500/550 (even though it claims 17bhp more, the weight is against it, plus, it doesn't actually produce anywhere near 67bhp at the wheel)
