CB500T Engine Help

coalnation

Live long and prosper.
Got my 75 CB500T put back together, seemed like it was ready to go. Took it outside and tried to kickstart it. It turned over a little bit but when I kicked down on the kickstarter it stayed completely down, I got no return on it. Also it seems as if it is leaking gasoline out of the top of the headers.... Needless to say I wasn't able to get it to fire up.

Any ideas on what could be the problem?

Kickstart return spring. Drain the oil, take the clutch cover off and see if the spring is connected or even there.

I got it to spring back up once, but normally it just stays down.

Gasoline from your headers?!? Not sure how that is even possible. It is likely leaking out of your tank, onto your engine and then onto your headers.

So it appears that the kickstart sping came lose... However, it seems like there may be some damage too. Anyone have any ideas?

How do I put it back on?

Doesn't look like there is any damage.

Put the larger prong on the little block/ridge I have pointed to, and once in place, the smaller one needs to be rotated until it latches onto the other arrow.

*EDIT* - It may be the other way round, as in put the smaller one first and then twist to fit the bigger one, I cant really remember.

I'm dealing with a similar bike. Turns out the guy that put it together says it was his first rebuild. Oh joy! :D

So he put the spring on, but it never occurred to him to test it. Now I have to open the thing and spin that spring around and lemme tell ya, most times I don't even bother to take these off. What a bitch.

The secret is that it can fit pretty easily, but if it goes on easy it's on WRONG! It needs to be rotated around once and then set the spring on the ledge outlined.

Basically, you're winding it as you install it. Basically, it sucks. It really sucks.

Remove the clutch and wind that sucker up good.

I'll repeat, it sucks. IT. SUCKS.

I feel like i'm getting close. However when I get it wound up and I let it go, it goes back to being lose...

Place it on the kick-starter flange/receiver thingo.

Then turn the large right-angle-hooked side clocklike once, until it reaches that ledge.

If I had a camera, I'd video it and help ya. But I lack a camera nor really the will to wind one up right now after draining the oil and removing the side-cover.

Lucky for you, maybe, a client has a CB450 here that needs that spring wound. And soon I will have a camera. Hope you figure something out before then, though.

Pretty much what I did. I feel like I found the problem though. It seems like a piece of the case has been broken off and it's causing it not to catch on the other side.... Any insight?

Ooooooooh, ouch. I believe that is where the kick-starter comes to rest. Nice knowin' ya =\

If ya live near Dallas I'll split the case and install a new lower for ya :P

Haha what a bummer. So far from Dallas.

Same problem my friend had.

What you can do instead of changing the cases (you will need both the upper and lower due to the way they were bored in the factory) is to drill a small hole in to the bit that broke, tap it, put a bolt in and loctite the shit out of it.

But on my mates the whole block was broken, not just part of it like yours, so im not sure you could even the bolt fiix would fit in there.

Don't forget hondatwins.net.

Not as populated as DTT but there are many guys with loads of experience on those very engines over there. They may know some hints/tricks.
