CB550 k charging gremlin

Battery on my 550k is not getting recharged. Stator, rectifier and voltage regulator were replaced by a shop in Toronto, but problem persists after $850 for the same problem that it rolled in with and they dont seem to enthused to actually fix it.Any suggestions on a remedy?.Only getting 12.25V @3000rpm.FANX Frenchie.
 
Which shop did you take it to, and what was their diagnosis of the problem?

Hey Tim,

That is Don's bike, the one he got at the Milton Swap meet last October...
 
They rewound the stator, replaced the rectifier and volt reg. That was the initial diagnoses.When I got the bike back it still would not charge, so they took it back,and it still would not charge, so I took it back and it still would not charge. How deep into the testing of the wiring I dont know?After a month without the bike and the same problem -minus $850 I am seeking advice elsewhere. I would do it myself, but working 12-14hr days - I dont have much tyime, that is why I went to the shop on River street initially.
 
So did they test each component individually? I'm no expert on electrical (I hate the stuff) but I'm sure each component can be tested individually.
 
Ummm , probably not.I kept on saying it was probably a switch or a ground,but I got almost a whole new charging system instead.Oh well....once it does get fixed at least I knowit should charge strong. But til then.
 
Don't know about the 550K, but had an old Kawi KZ650 that did the same thing to me. Tested all components and replaced the week ones. Still no charge. After beeting my head a gainst the wall for almost 6 months, I decded to chop it and redo all the wiring. In the process, I came across a fuse that was not in the fuse block. It was inline between the battery and the voltage regulator. It was blown. Replaced it and it charged fine from that day forward.

You went to Motorcycle Superstore :o :o ??? That was your first mistake. That has to be the worst shop for servicing in Toronto.
 
Okay, this has happened to me before and I remember what happened. Went through the same ordeal as you except I did all the replacing myself and it still wasn't charging. Then I realized the wires that lead to the stator plug on the wiring harness were loose. The plastic plug is so old and brittle that the wires were loose and weren't making a solid contact when the stator was plugged in. The wires would push out of the plug when I tried to connect the stator. Solution, epoxy the wires onto the plug to prevent them from moving. Take a look and this may be the culprit.
 
Thanks for all your advice and help. I found out that if I remove one of the lighting fuses I get a good charge and the bike runs-hence without a rear light.I do appreciate all the advice, looks like I will be busy but at least I know where to search.Thanks again- Frenchie.
