CB650 carb needs help

So I've got this raggedy "80 CB650. when I bought it it had no airbox. I did some checking and found the stock air filter system has about a gazillion parts and runs almost to the rear fender. So i slapped some pod filters on it thinking they'd be better than nothing.... My baby runs but definitely needs help I find I need to run full choke forever and when I drop the choke the bike wants to stall when I slow or stop. I'm pretty sure I fouled a set of plugs running it this way (which I've replaced with the manufacturer spec'ed NGKs) and from time to time the stall leaves me stranded for a little while before the bike will fire up again. Long enough for a smoke and cup of coffee usually.

Through my checking I've found most people suggest hunting down the stock air system... I don't want to do that. Mostly the "need" for running anything but pods is due to the slow jets being pressed into the carb and seemingly non-adjustable.

Any body here had luck with pods on this specific bike? I've thought of trying to restrict airflow by packing the filters with something but I don't want any foreign materials in my motor and I'm not sure what size jets to go with if I re-jet the mains.

On a related but unrelated subject, my #1 carb has a serious leak from the overflow tube. I've checked the float and searched for a crack in the tube. Both are fine o I'm guessing new needles are in my near future. The bike pours gas when idling.

I had the same problems with my 79', I completely removed the air box and all components. Jetted the carbs to 120 Main & 42 Low, air mixture set at 2 full turn out. My bike is running great. When I got the bike it had been sitting for a while and I kept having the the same carb leaking issue. I just used some berrymans and q-tips and cleaned it spot less. No more leaks, but it took some time to get them cleaned. I am running the stock exhaust but have been thinking about going to 4-1 mac.

I want to put pods on my 1983 CB650SC. I completely disassembled the carbs and cleaned them really well. Do you know if they would be much different?
