CB750 steering damper frame mount??

I've searched high and low on the forums and google and have not been able to find anything helpful. Does anyone have a steering damper mounted on a CB750? I'm thinking of buying this damper http://www.mikesxs.net/products-20.html#products (scroll down a bit to the NHK damper) which would mount right into the lower triple into the pre-drilled hole on the right side, but I haven't been able to find a clamp that would go onto the frame of my bike so that I can attach the other end of the damper. I don't have access to a machine shop or I'd try to make my own clamp. Does anyone have a solution to this or have any suggestions of parts I can maybe pick up at the local hardware store?

I'm lucky enough to work at a machine shop, so I'm gonna fab my own up when I get a damper, but I'll go take a look at the bike tonight and see if I can figure something out that would work using hardware store parts. I'll get back to you.

Awesome, thank you. I've been staring at my bike now for about 2 hours trying to figure out how to mount it and where on the frame would be the best spot. Also anyone know the size damper I need? I'm confused as to what I'm measuring on the dampers. From the bolt hole on my lower triple to the frame measures about 170mm. Would this one work?

Hi,

I have a CB900, basically the same layout. To my recollection there has never been a comercially avaliable frame bracket for the DOHC 750/900s. On mine I welded a bracket on the flat on the frame below the tank. I am using the same type of damper. They were originally sold for fitment on kawasakis over here in Aus.

Although they only have rubber bushes on the mounts, they work just fine. I have used a few of these over the years and theone I have fitted to CB900 is 26yo and is still in top working order.

Got a pic of your setup? I'd like to see the tab you welded on

Without welding a bracket of some type on the frame in between # 3 and 4 exhaust, I don't see any way to mount a damper on our frames. The down tubes are at a narrow angle and there isn't a lot of clearance between the exhaust pipes and the tire. Maybe one of us will come up with something and we could make it en masse and become rich and famous for solving the problem of dampers on CB750's and everyone will want to be us and we can buy big ass garages with umpteen CB's and spend all day up to our elbows in old ass bike parts. Well, it's a dream anyway.

I don't have a great shot of it, but I mounted my damper using a clamp (from a rowboat oar-lock kit believe it or not) to my frame. I ran across from the right frame downtube to my left fork tube.

It allows full range of motion and doesn't bind. These things seem to be trial and error - took me a little bit of fiddling to find the one orientation and position that would work from steering lock to lock.

I just scrolled through a pile of pics of CVB750['s and most with dampers had them mounted on the right side ( which seems to be wrong to me). I can't see the brackets well in any of them but it looks as if they have a bracket bolted to the exhaust cam box.

One with the damper on the left side looked like the old "Kawasaki" damper and is tucked in so tight it looks like it's almost under the front lower edge of the tank. I'd guess that they just drilled a hole in that frame brace at the front of the tank.

A couple of Freddie Replicas had the damper mounted across the front of the downtubes using a bracket from the lower triples to act on the sideways damper. Search for Daytona 2010 Vintage race or AHRMA pictures.

That is a great idea, if you can get a picture of the clamp itself mounted to the frame that would help a ton. I'm trying to figure out where I can locally pick up an oar lock kit around here..

I have a cb900, and was able to weld a mount on the frame (as someone earlier mentioned?):

My damper is quite a bit longer than your unit however, and I don't think your will work in this position? It looks like yours is more suited to the 'modern' system that mounts up near the steering stem on the current sports bikes.

That is an awesome clamp and I'm sure will come in handy for a good number of us. I might grab one for my XS650 to avoid welding on the frame which is already powdercoated (many years ago). I've tried to find clamps like this with no luck.

Wonder if they come in black? $50 is a lot for the clamp, but if it's rock solid and avoids grinding, welding and painting, then it's not so bad.

i did it like this on a 550.

little bracket tig-welded to the frame. Clears tank and can make a full turn.
