Chain Master Link

Didn't know where to put a chain question so here it is. Is a rivit type master ink as strong as the rest of the links in the chain and stronger than a clip-on type master link?

Yes. Clip-ons will work in a pinch, but avoid them. Another alternative, at least for EK chains, screw in link. I ran one nearly 8k, then broke due to neglect

I AM NOT USING CLIP ON MASTER LINKS. The question refers to rivit master links.

I would love to see a metallurgist or mechanical engineer weigh in on this - but given the way that stress is distributed through a rivet or a clip master link, I don't see how there would be a significant difference in tensile strength across the links or shear force through the pins between the master link types and/or the regular links.

Be interested to see some empirical data either way though.

I agree with you. I understand where you have a clip-on link where there is a chance that it "could" come off, but I really don't see how the link itself is any weaker than a chain link or a rivit master link

Yes, a riveted link will be just as strong as the rest of the links (if not, the difference is marginal and nothing to worry about). I doubt very much (like Rich pointed out) that it will be any stronger than a clip style link since the forces on the chain are not really pushing out onto the links that much, they are inline with the chain. As far as the link popping off with a clip style, I guess its possible, but even a riveted one can as well if the rivet is not installed correctly. They both have pros and cons.

You should see the chain off my CL72, previous owners would just add a clip link or two any time the chain got damaged. Pop out a stretched section, put in a new chunk, clip links at both ends. I bet I can shrink the chain a good 5 inches and lose 4 or 5 clipped links...

I gave up on riveted links years ago, kept breaking the tool set. Have never had a clip style master link fail, even w/o paying attention to which way the open end goes, since I can never remember which way is right...
