cheap parts washer?

hey yall just finished tearing down an old bsa 2 stroke and the inside of the cases is just coated with old varnished gas. the outsides are pretty nasty as well but i could clean that up just on a bench. i do not have access to an actual parts washer so i was wondering if anyone had any ideas for a sort of cheap temporary at home parts washer? or maybe if there was some sort of service that would do it for me? would prefer the former as i'm not looking to spend too much money. the only thing i can really think of is to just fill up a tub with mineral spirits and go to town with a scrub brush? any thoughts? thanks in advance.

$40, has a lid so you can close it up and store it. I know kerosene and diesel are decent degreasers too.

I have a big rubbermaid-type tote with a couple of gallons of degreaser in it. Beats a sharp stick in the face.

Yeah, dish washer works great, just load up use the washer soap, put on pots and pans or hot and as long a cycle as you can and go.

Make sure to get all the large crap out, since it will not get past the screens.

I use the car wash as well, hot water soap and my rain gear. ;D

It also is a great way to clean guns. just remember to oil them back up when you are done

Send your wife to work and use the dish washer in the kitchen.

*** And nobody will ever find out***

carwash is my weapon of choice aswell. Rainwear is a good tip, i might use that :P

Yeah FIRST time I went to the wash I DIDN'T bring my gear, was sopping wet when I got done. Next time brought all my gear and some diving goggles, everyone thought I was nuts till I got to work. ;D

I brought a plastic 55 gallon drum home from work to make a Keg cooler out of, cut the top 1/3 off... then when I needed to clean my engine cases I looked over at the piece I had cut off, PERFECT! Sturdy, holds several gallons of kerosene with the side about 1 foot tall, works awesome.

thanks everyone the car wash idea is pretty brilliant. i think my wife would actually for real murder me if i used the dishwasher. dont own any rain gear so i guess i'll just wear some shorts. will let you know how it goes.

The girlfriend told me last night that she would kill me if I did it. She never loads or unloads the dishwasher, she will never know.

There's a tshirt in this one

I was leaving the restaurant the other night and the waitress said "You have a good one."
I agreed but am still trying to figure out how she knows. :D

yeah just got back from the car wash and i'm soaking wet. cases came out not so bad. theres still some gunk in some crevices i couldn't get out. so now i guess my new question is this. since this thing is a two stroke and the cases are aluminum i would say sand blasting is just out of the question. whats everyones experience with soda/walnut/glass bead blasting? should i just buckle and take them somewhere? would those soda blasters from harbor freight cut it? are they worth it? also just to give everyone an idea as to how much shit was in the cases, it was completely frozen up and the crank wouldn't even turn when i seperated the cases.

Have them vapor blasted. It's a process where they mix glass bead into a soapy water slurry and then pressure wash with it. It is non invasive and can be done to the inside and out and doesn't remove any material. Pricing is reasonable and worth shipping the parts to Ore.. I had my whole XR motor done this way. Glass bead blasting has a tendency to embed beads into the walls of the substrate and when they get warm these particles release and can destroy a motor rapidly.

01marc that just sold me. thanks so much for this information.
My engine builder told me to make sure to not blast the valve guides or bearing races. Jeff Gibson the owner told me that it won't either of those things and to just leave them alone. They wash it all out after blasting and recommend going through all your oil passage holes with compressed air after just to make sure everything is clean. Prices are very reasonable too. They are one of my sponsors on the XR. If you send them to him make sure you tell him I sent you.
