I'm more and more tempted to buy a set every time i see that picture. how hard is it and what is involved in installing these on a '76 cb550?
Easy shmeesy. Buy a set of headlight brackets from www.mikesxs.com (you need 35mm), loosen the forks in the triple tree, lower them, off come the original headlight ears, on go the headlight brackets and clipons.
Does your 550 have gaitors on the forks? You might not be able to use them after.

keep in mind im really new to all of this. I'm assuming the "gaitors" are the part in this picture that i've drawn a red circle around.
No - the gaitors are the accordian black rubber sleeves on your forks. They interlock with the bottom of the headlight ears, which you've circled.
The red circled parts have to go if you want to run clipons, and the accordians go with them. You can run standard dust caps on the forks like on later model 550's.
Alternatively run clubmans. With clipons you're left with the issue of what to do with your old unused handlebar clamps.
Looks like you have a much taller than stock set of bars, which likely means longer than stock throttle and clutch cables, as well as the brake line which looks like it could strangle you
You'd likely have to change these out too. Bike will look great with lower bars - even $30 'superbike' bars from your local motorcycle shop would look and feel great.

Actually, you can do what I did on my cb550f. Just lower the front end and have the forks come through the top of the tripple and then you can just clip them on top of the tripple rather than below. That way you can keep everything from the headlight mounts to the gators stock.... just a thought...
