way too cool. apparently its pricy at 60-80 grand, but i figure we can design and build one for around 1 grand ;)

I like this one better, Its more sneekey.

If you can afford to excavate and build something like that, you can afford a fucking 4 car garage. Stupid to have something that elaborate in a 2 car garage.

That being said, for $2K you can buy a 4 post single car lift. I've often thought about putting one in my 12 x 20 foot garage, re-building the roof into a hip / barn roof or something for extra height, and putting my bikes/tool cabinets etc. on a platform built on the lift. Park the car beneath, and lower the platform when I want to work on my bike. I don't have the real estate to build a 2 car garage sadly, but for maybe $5K all in, I could easily do it. Spread the 4 posts out to the far corners and build a whole floor on the lift - 2 x 8 joists closely spaced, couple layers of 3/4" plywood - would be plenty strong.

I think I should do that. :D

I like the way you think Tim. I also have a 12 x20 garage with a low ceiling. Thou it would be super sweet to put in a lift that extended up into the living room above. . . hmmm

Hey Tim, What if you just don't have enough land? I think if you live in Toronto you know land or parking isn't easy to come across. Say your a rich bastard who buys a house with enough space to build a two car garage but you have a daily driver for you, your wife and a kids car in the drive... Where do your bikes and rides go? Hell, a pop up work shop would be ballin if it had a brake, roller, english wheel, planshing hammer, welder, etc. Even a good place to stick a project when your not working on it.

What if you want your toy/s relativity secure and hidden?

It's be awesome to go out there after a week of heavy rain, raise it up, and find 5' of water in there, just like a cistern, too...kind of a dunk an rinse for whatever special you had in there! :D

I think for underground you'd want to live in the desert; any kind of moiture at all could be potentially disasterous!

When I look at underground, I think about the cost of excavation. That gets expensive FAST! Just the fill dirt work I had done at the house was in the thousands. I can't imagine what it would cost to build a garage underground. The stackable thing is pretty common for existing structures with no room for expansion, but in my experience, it is cheaper to just build as big as possible from the get go. Pretty cool though!

My above ground garage can get wet enough inside as it is...I'd hate to think about dealing with that thing and about a foot of melting snow above it. A root cellar comes more readily to mind than a corrosion free valuables storage place...

Nah, sump pump or not, I think I'll stay above ground here.

haha yeah i hear all of you.

it would be cool if you had a large basement though, or if you always aspired to be batman as a child.

as for excavation... rent a backhoe for a week and youll get it done.

Wouldn't he be spewin if his Ford GT or Aston Martin got stuck underground because the hydraulics packed it in and he was late for the hairdressers appointment :P

Tim, your idea has merit. I did something similar with my baby barn. It isn't a lift but I put a 12 12 pitch on when I built because I had limited resources but the cost was very little to make that roof. When it got too full to work on the GL I built a loft above head 3/4 of the way and was able to move all the seasonal stuff up and have room to pull the motor out of the gl, and put it back. The lift idea is friggin smart. As log as you had pins to slide in to lock it and take the pressure off the hydraulics you would be golden. You also would only need maybe 5-6 feet above the lift for your bikes etc. Would allow you room to keep a few extra projects I bet.

Boys, a buddy of mine has a lift in his garage. He had the ceiling reworked along with the trusses. He made just enough room to lift his '65 'Vette high enough to drive his Jimmy underneath it! 8) His house is just a "run of the mill" bungalow like you'd see on a thousand streets in the USA and Canada. Wicked garage though! 8)

I wish I had a pic! It's a nice set up that allows him to park all 3 vehicles in the garage. :)

if all goes as planned, my father plans to put a lift in his garage in his retirement house in malta. Mostly because he doesnt have the length for two cars and a boat, and he needs a place for my mini. should be nice to have it handy to work on cars =D

now if only i had one in the damn US... >,>

I fully intend on a 2 poster in the new shop I'm building. The scissor trusses were used for that very reason. 16 foot floor to ceiling head room! I plan on using a maxjax lift because they make attachments to convert them from one car lift to two moto lifts. Oh yeah!
