Does this upholstery quote seem high??

Coast to Coast
So I want to get my CB350 seat refoamed and reupholstered. Basically I want the foam to be like a typical cafe racer seat with a small hump and then I want ti upholstered in some sort of black marine vinyl. Nothing fancy, just a step up from the stock seat. I hit up an upholstery place the other day and got a quote from them for $825. Is it me or does that seem insanely high? Maybe I'm just not understanding the work that goes into the job but the bike only cost $1400, so I'm not about to dump $800 into a seat.

i just got the 2 seats re-padded and covered in a pattern heavy duty marine vinyl for my gl650

the drivers seat she reshaped for me as well the passenger seat was left basically stock

cost 100 for both seats

You'll find incredibly varied prices for this kind of work - I would expect to pay about $200 for something like that and be happy if you got away with it for less.

$200 was pretty much around what I was expecting to pay. $825 sounds more like they just don't want to do it so they threw me a crazy high price.

Are you providing them a seat pan with hump already built and just tyring to get some foam/vinal done to it? If so I have normally paid around 150 for this at good shops. If you are having them build a structural hump (not just foam), seat pan, etc then I could see the price getting high quickly.

DIY!

Here's my CB550 seat from WAY back. It was the 11th thread ever posted on DO THE TON. This thread in comparison is #49,918 :D

Anyhow - here's the link. Was very easy to do. So if nothing else, this should give you an idea of what is needed to be done so you can guage professional estimates. $825 is insanely high, unless there was a running bike included with the seat. Should be $100-$200 for a professional to carve your foam, add some new stuff in to make it comfy and upholster it in simple black vinyl.

I have the pan. All I wanted was foam and it upholstered in vinyl.

I would say that the shop doesn't have time for the seat due to larger projects and quoted it so they wouldn't worry about you coming back, and if you did for that price they would find a way. Find another shop.

Yeah, they made it pretty clear, they don't want your business, you can buy complete seats for half that. I usually find a nice Hispanic family business, they do a great job for a reasonable price. You can have seats built by the best in the business and not spend $800....

I have bought 3 seats from this seller and have been happy with their work.

jesus i have custom seats made all the time for around $100 in covering work... that is bonkers! i had 2 car seats and a full bench seat in back done in 2 tone tuck and roll for $400 they are smoking crack!

Yeah, I figured they just didnt want to do it. Instead of being dickholes and quoting a dumb price they should have just said they don't want to do it.

I just went ahead and ordered through them. It's fairly cheap and it's what I'm looking for stylistically.
