DT400 - the big-bang build: Big changes!

Re: DT400 - the big-bang build!

If you pull and gut the silencer arrestor tip, or put on an aftermarket replacement, the stock pipe wakes up immensely. The silencer tip is REALLY restrictive from the factory:

Here is a picture of one sliced open FYI

I opened up the inside, keeping a spark arrester function for trail riding in the US, but the sound and power increased a bunch.

Re: DT400 - the big-bang build!

Stock pipe is also real heavy, it's got fiberglass sandwiched between outer skin and inner perforated section
The glass gets carboned up or soaked with oil, I cut mine open t welded seam, gutted it and welded back together
It is pretty quiet though but aftermarket pipe is still lighter and better performance

Re: DT400 - the big-bang build!

makotosun - I will definitely be using an aftermarket silencer; there is nothing to love about the original unit. It's ugly, heavy, and restrictive.

crazypj - I couldn't believe the weight of the original pipe, and that external flange looks really clumsy. All the indentations and changes in cross-section can't be any help to it's functioning either.

I am thinking along these lines for a new pipe (apologies for the poor quality of the photo, it's the best I could find).

Re: DT400 - the big-bang build!

If your not off roading low level pipe will be much better and easier to make/have made
BTW, good pic ;)

Re: DT400 - the big-bang build!

I think I have a few random dt400 parts in my garage (sold the bike) i will have to look for you. I know I have a piston and a counter shaft cover.

Re: DT400 - the big-bang build!

Crazypj - those were my exact thoughts. As for the photo: you can believe that King Kenny is high up in my respect list. He could ride the wheels off anything!

Falcon - thanks for the kind thoughts.

Let us know if you come across something like this. I know someone considering building one from scratch, but it'll be a major pain.

I thought I saw on one of the forums (I forget if here or elsewhere, maybe YamahaEnduro.com) about someone putting together a present day group purchase of newly built DT400 performance pipes. Has anyone else come across that discussion thread, or know what became of it?

Re: DT400 - the big-bang build!

I haven't seen a pipe like this on offer. If I go this direction I would probably have to get it custom built.

If anyone has heard of a source I would be very happy to hear of it!

I have tried many times to access the Yamaha Enduro forum but it always times out. Could anyone enlighten me?

Last night, I found the thread I was looking for on www.YamahaEnduro.com but it won't come up today. it's a glitchy site, for sure, but I'm not complaining about a good source of info, run probably, on 100% volunteer labor. Its a LONG thread, but basically, some DT400 / 250 riders got a guy in Houston (I think) to fab up a 'performance' pipe for those bikes, but it performed like crap, and many asked for teir money back. It looked like it was designed for a modern 250, with a short fat chamber, not suitable for 1970's engines.

Re: DT400 - the big-bang build!

Fat pipes OK - Short pipes with steep tapers definitely a no-no for a lazy big single designed for torque.

Still haven't been able to log onto the (mythical?) Yamaha Enduro forum, but will keep trying.

Re: DT400 - the big-bang build!

I found some of those threads last night. Good luck accessing them. I promise, they're there, but the site does go down regularly.

the hug DT400 Pipe thread mentioned above:
http://www.yamahaenduro.com/showthread.php?t=16616

another, regarding silencers, I think: http://www.yamahaenduro.com/showthread.php?t=21435

IT400 head swap discussion: http://www.yamahaenduro.com/showthread.php?t=22352

Have fun with it, and keep the DT400 updates coming! I'll convince the local guy at my end to begin a build thread on his DT400 road racer project soon.

Site won't let me look at it without signing up :(

Re: DT400 - the big-bang build!

YE has indeed been dodgy as hell. I had regular issues but contacted admin on several occasions and finally got it sorted.
You need to send them your IP address and they tinker and tanker and do their shiet and suddenly you're back online for good.

admin@yamahaenduro.com

this guy dropped in a line to tell me it had been fixed
micro182@att.net

hope this helps. YE is an amazing source of information!

Download GREENSHOT and copy any pics you want to share.

Re: DT400 - the big-bang build!

It's just useful, plus, if your on a site where you have to be a member, you can just capture the pics you want to share/show people
I've used it on a lot of sites where you couldn't download or copy just part of screen

Re: DT400 - the big-bang build!

I didn't think of using it that way! Sometimes I'm a bit slow on the uptake.

A very useful download.
