Electrically challenged noob (78 KZ400B)

I bought it cheap as a basket case, stuck the motor in my 75 frame (the titled one). I got the motor, hand controlls, reg/rec, coils, all hooked up. and the battery is in (brand new). but as ive never seen it complete im afraid ive done it wrong. the previous owner said he ran it without a battery for years, but i dont know how true that is.. so what could be fried if at all? :-\ i did buy a new reg/rec for it.. what else should i check? cant get her to crank..

Thanks in advance for your patience. any help getting my old junk kz on the road is much appreciated :)

When you say, "crank", do you mean the starter motor isn't working or the engine will turn over but not run?

I mean I cant get the starter motor to do anything. it does absolutely nothing when I turn the key and press the starter button.

Locate the starter solenoid. There should be a black and a yellow/red wire on it.

Using a couple of test wires from the battery, positive goes to the black wire and negative to the yellow/red. You can do this with everything turned off. If your solenoid is working, the engine should turn over.

If the solenoid is working, the next test is for the wiring. Using a multimeter, ensure you have continuity to ground on the yellow/red wire in the harness. The black wire should have +12V when pressing the starter button.

Best state in the union. ;)

Okay.. been really busy past few weeks with work.. but i managed to get her to turn over.. i clamped the ground coming from the motor, and the ground from the batter togther, the touching the live post to the frame of the bike the starter motor began turning. but! no spark.. all fuses are good, new plugs, i tested with both ignition coils in my posession.

also, starter button dosesnt do a dang thing..

Hook everything up, turn on the ignition and set the kill switch to run.

Test for voltage at the black/white wires going into the coils and then the yellow and the blue wires at the points. You should have 12V the whole way.
