Might be a dumb question but during a rebuild is it a good idea to put assembly lube on the piston skirts? Are the rings supposed to be bone dry? Should I put a smear of oil on the rings?
The old guys will tell you to put the rings in dry, maybe just a dab of oil on the skirts. That is if you are planning on firing up the engine right as soon as it goes into a frame. Rings will bed in very quickly that way.
I usually plan on having the engine sit together for a little while before I know I will be able to run it and its stupid humid around here most of the time so I really don't want things to rust. Pistons and rings go in with a light coat of oil since I know I will be be futzing with things.
