Hello all,
I'm sure there is a posting somewhere on this vast site about this topic, but I havent quite got the search function figured out yet. My question is this: how can I remove the paint on my GS650 engine without disassembling it? The bike has some new gaskets and I believe it to be a solid engine (waiting on a carb cleanup to really hear it run), but it was originally painted black and much of the paint has chipped and flaked off of the engine. I'd like to either repaint it or just leave it in raw aluminum. Can I safely use a stripper (paint stripper, that is)? I was going to try a wire wheel on my angle grinder too to reach in between the fins. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

Don't use a wire wheel. That will make a mess of the aluminum.

Get yourself some spray-on aircraft paint stripper. Keep in mind that it will fuck up the paint on your frame or anything else, too. Do it at a self-serve car wash, and use the pressure wand to blow off the paint and stripper. If that doesn't work, soda blasting is effective.

I'f you've got to blow off a stripper you're in the wrong joint ;)

But yeah, a good paint stripper will do the job, but it will ruin any paint it touches, so I'd personally pull the engine to do it.
