Enine only runs while starter is on.

Sorry if this is covered in another thread but I can't seem to find one.
I got a gs450 part way through a conversion with a lot of the wiring disconnected and items like the kickstand safety switch and clutch safety switch removed. I pulled all of the wiring out cleaned it up a bit and put it back with new connectors following the wiring diagram. I finally have the bike turning on and it will run and shift into gear on the center stand, until I let go of the starter switch. I have already checked the ignition switch and it's all good there AlsoI have rechecked all of the replaced connectors and they seem solid. I can not figure out where my problem could be, I've been tryting to narrow it down for 2 weeks getting nowhere. Any ideas? thanks.
 
Is it possible that it is wired such that the coils and/or ignition box are not getting juice unless the starter button is depressed?

Yeah , thats my thought aswell. As i'm a Honda man, i'll try to explain what would cause such symptoms if it were a honda.

Main power from battery goes to starter relay, and that relay is switched by the starter-button on the bars. My guess is you wired something wrong around the relay, and that it now controls the starter motor (wich is good) but also functions as an extra main-switch (like ignition lock). Check the wiring diagram and you should be ok.

Do other functions like lights and horn work when starter is not applied? Or is everything affected?

Ha, first bike I've had that isn't pedal powered so I've never needed a shed to work in before. other things are working, just have to find the time to follow all of these connections, sounds like the honda has the same wiring there, hopefully mine is right. Dove in head first on my first motorized vehicle in a decade, so progress is slow.

Atleast, thats what i read everywhere. My experience tells me that you win when you ride the shit out of it.
 
turns on, stays on, stops when I flip the kill switch, seems pretty good to me. had it wired wron up near teh starter switch, appreciate the help guys, can't wait to get the rest done and get it on the road.
