Fast and erratic idle

Been Around the Block
Ok I still seem to be having an issue with an erratic idle speed with my cbx550, it seems to get worse the warmer the bike gets. The idle speed will gradually increase the longer i ride, the more I thrash it the worse it gets. I have rebuilt the carbs using keister carb kits. I am using the standard airbox set up. I can't physically feel any air leaks. When I asked on here before someone mentioned valve clearances as a possible cause? I am a bit of a novice when it comes to engine innards! Is this something I could do myself with the aid of a manual? Or do I need special tools? What does the job entail? Enlighten me engine gurus.;D

Sounds like an air leak. Try spraying around sealed areas with some wd40 or ether and see if idle changes.
If checking for cam clearance issue, you can compression check cold , then when warm. or if available, do a leak down test.

Top tip! Did this today. Got the bike warmed up and then sprayed WD40 directly onto the carb inlet manifolds one at a time. When I spray onto no2 the idle speed shoots up. At least I know where to start now. I have ordered new o ring seals for the manifolds and will have to check the manifold itself for cracks or damage. Might have to repair it if it is damaged as they are very difficult to buy, new ones anyway.:-\

Try some liquid gasket like Threebond 1104. That did the trick on mine until I was able to find a new set.

I used a product, self sticking silicone tape on the CX boots as they were cracked and unobtanium. I will see if I can find a link but it is super easy to use and seals them up tight without goop. Available in hardware stores in the plumbing section usually and is fuel stable, can be used to repair damaged fuel lines etc. You stretch it out and it only sticks to itself.

Hmmmm, might be able to get something like that in work.... the link would be great though.;)

I used Gorilla tape on a set of cracked handlers and it worked out great until I could find replacements.

Here is the link to the stuff I bought, It works and from What guys on the CX forum say it is pretty much permanent and if it wears out you can just peel it off and wrap new.

Another question, in the manual for my cbx it shows the vacuum pipe on the carburettor inlet manifold far left if you are sat on the bike. However mine is actually on the second one in from the left. Does it make a difference which one it is on?

Ok hear I am again:-\ Honda cbx550.
Carbs rebuilt including diagphrams and all jets etc. New inline fuel filter. Valve clearances checked. New o rings from carb boots to cylinder head. New plugs. New air filter.(standard set up)
My idle speed is ok most of the time but has to be set slightly on the high side to avoid stalling. Bike takes ages to warm up but is ok through the range apart from a slight stutter at about half throttle. My main problem is if I run it up to about 70mph for a few minutes the idle speed increases a fair bit and hangs there.
I even sealed around the air box to see if it would help and I think it did but now it's back to doing the idle thing.
It's getting me down now, can't enjoy my build and about to take it somewhere for them to look at. Any ideas people?
