Finding Original Motor Engine Number for a Honda

I'm having a problem changing the title on a recently acquired CB125. The owner before the last must have swapped out the motor (engine # doesn't match what they have on their records). What I'm trying to do at this point is find out what the original engine number was, so I can change the title into my name. I tried the dealership, but since its such an old bike, they didn't have a record in their system of the engine number. I'd imagine the stock engine number should be recorded somewhere (other than the DMV of course). Anyone have a grand idea on how I can figure this out?

i'd say contact one of those title services and see what they can dig up, they are doing that kind of leg work all the time.

On older Hondas (maybe others as well), the engine number never matched the vin number on the neck of the bike.

What did they say about the vin number?

In my state historic tags = no inspection, no questions asked out the door in 10 min with tags. If you dont make a big deal about something they wont eather. The engine # is not on the title is it? If the vin# is right what is the problem

Basically the motor has been changed out at some point. Here in MN in order to transfer a motorcycle title you have to have the engine number, and it has to match what they have on file. The idea is to stop people from putting stolen motors in bikes, but like most things the government does, it only inconveniences the people that aren't trying to break the law.

After talking to the DMV, they said in order to get the engine number changed, you have to provide the title and a receipt of purchase from the bike that the new motor came out of. Which is a total joke since on something this old and small the motor could have come from anywhere. They said I might be able to get by with just a receipt, but its on a case-by-case basis. This is why I'm trying to find out what the original engine number is, so I can avoid having to fake paperwork and go through all the BS to appease the state.
