First Project - 76 CB750F !

turned over for as long as I held the starter button.

Sounds normal, then. Engine should still turn over with the button pressed, but it won't actually start unless kill switch is set to 'run'.

phew. That stumped me for a second. Thanks Sonreir, you're awesome.

Also, working in healthcare, I think I'm really excited about the idea of 'diagnosing' whats going on with my bike but If I ever seem like I'm missing the point or just way off base I hope someone will let me know.

You drianed all the oil and then spent the day spinning the engine over? Why?
60 is still very low. The manual will have the exact number you are looking for. I would assume 120-150psi. The switch in the bars with off-on-off only has to do with the spark being on or off. Nothing to do with the motor turning over.

Don't understand what you mean about the rockers though.

Yeah I definetly wouldn't pull the chute on this bike. My first project was a 75 cb750 and I didn't know jack about bike work then. I've put 6500 miles on it in the 3 years since. If those carb boots are cracked, oem ones are still available at any honda dealer for that year. Thats what I ended up doing on mine.

Also, whatever riding position feels best to you, go with it. I use clipons and stock pegs, and it works great for me. I like the mockup with the colors too, I hope this works out for you. 750s are a lot of fun and heavy enough to hold themselves on the road pretty well. My wife (haircuttergirl) is buildi g her cb350 and learning a lot of stuff for the first time too and is loving it. Welcome to dtt!

Welcome,

Looks like you are digging in and learning the "FUN" of old bikes. One step at a time, No reason to throw in the towel yet. Lots of people here with good answers and ideas for help.

I was expecting low readings, I was more looking for consistency between the cylinders. Seemed like a good place to start. I have a feeling I will be spending -all day- doing tons of stupid shit. If you have a better idea on how to get my engine running let me know! The valves were were staying closed at first on one cylinder, then they moved inconsistency up and down as the motor turned over. Something about the rocker arm wasn't working. When I open it up, I'll might have a better idea as to why..but I found a complete assembly on ebay for pretty cheap with low miles on it so I'll probably just replace it.

*I need to quit posting stuff with my phone.

Pictures of what you're dealing with are always helpful - we're all photo junkies here and it's easier to be armchair mechanics that way :)

Yeah, I'll see about posting a video of this issue later in the week, seems like pictures would be just as redundant as my explanation. In other news I got my carbs cleaned. Now need to buy a float bowl gasket.

I'm quickly adding to a never-ending list of parts I need to replace :)

Also, Thanks Mr. E and gk45011! I definitely appreciate all the encouragement. haha hopefully soon I'll make some actual progress.

Darlin' your machine is progressing quicker than mine! I've been poking at it for about 10 months now and its still scattered across the city. Engine in the garage, frame and swing arm in the shed, parts at work...
Keep going, you're doing great!

All I can say right now after another non-productive day with the bike is that

1. working on a bike is NEVER as easy as the instructions suggest

2. I obviously don't have a ton of common sense.

I ordered the camshaft off of ebay and it got lost and took forever to get to me, which was ok because my car broke down and surprisingly enough... I was able to buy a code reader, look up what was wrong and fix it myself! Coolest fucking feeling ever. I was hoping that confidence was going to carry me through the top engine rebuild but, I'm pretty lost. I'm going to a friends next week to try and get some much needed help.

I tried to make myself feel a little more productive by trying to strip the paint off of my tank. Turns out there were at least 3 different rattle can attempts and perhaps one semi-profession job. After a full can of paint stripper I kind of gave up and I think i'll just have to sand it down for days. At least there aren't any dents.

I'm really really want my next post to be me looking super stoked about my running motorcycle that just needs some new and improved parts and basic cleaning and repairs.....

For now my garage pile is exponentially increasing. :-X

Stripping paint is probably my least favorite part of any build. Making decent progress though!

Well, this was a long time coming but this became the basket case of all basket cases. So over the last few months several things happened:

1. My buddy who's been helping me walk through the engine work got into some major health issues.
2. I got into a huge wreck on my dads Harley (oops!) and couldn't walk for a few weeks...
3. After trusting the dude (Not sure why i thought THAT was a good idea..) I bought it from to sign over the title to me after I sent for the paperwork.... well he never had it and that was overall pretty frustrating.

Basically its been on the back burner for awhile now and I've adopted two other slightly more reasonable projects (75 GT185 and a running 72 CB500)

However, I did find a guy who's going to sell me a new 76 frame with a title and will basically just switch everything over and hopefully sell this mess before I push it off of a bridge.

At least... well... I've learned a lot! My other projects are making good and reasonable progress though so I'm going to probably make a post or two about them.

i wish i could get my hands on something like this! I LOVE FIXING STUFF!.

good luck with the build, will follow this for sure

BEFORE I drive up to Seattle though, how many of you think I can fit a giant 750 frame in my 99 saturn sedan?... the trunk folds down.....

Just a frame without swinger or front end should fit in a backseat without issue.
