first project: '77 cb550 with seized engine

Hey All,

I picked up my first project bike yesterday, a '77 CB550, came with title, a good frame/forks and is mostly complete. Only problem is the engine is seized. Picked it up for $100 so I am not in too deep.

Was hoping to get some recommendations on steps to unseize the engine. The bike had been sitting outdoors for a couple of years under a tarp. I am in Canada so it has seen some inclement weather over those 2 years.

My other thought is to find another engine that turns, just aren't sure how much $$ I would be looking at for that. It is the original engine and frame so I would like to get it working if possible.

Thanks for any advice!!

Hi mate welcome aboard first project likewise although ime into putting back together now aint no expert but few tips whatever stage take photos great for using as reference points helps with the thread when you ask for advice keeps ya goin when ya feel like takin a hammer to it haha i know that feeling with engine running n wiring not goin as planned . I used wd 40 and penatrating oil to loosen up the workins then stripped motor down should reveil why she is seized mate spare motors can be $$$$ and still be starting from scratch setting up post some pics we can all chip in then mate good luck

Put some WD40 or PB Blaster down the spark plugs holes and let is soak for a few days.

Pull the stator cover off so that you can put a socket on the end of the crankshaft. Use a breaker bar, and start working the end of the shaft back and forth. Don't use a lot of force, use persistence. If that doesn't work, heat the cylinders with a torch. Keep working with the heat, and going back and forth with the breaker bar. Good chance you will get it to break loose and start turning, then you can tear the engine down.

Get back to us if that doesn't work.

Thanks for the quick responses!

I'll pick up the PB Blaster and give the insides a good soaking and will try working the crankshaft when I get a little time on the weekend. If I can't get it loose that way I will definitely let you know the progress.

I'm also going to start up a build thread in the next day or 2 with pics and progress reports where I can hopefully get some more good advice.

if anyone else has other steps to take I am all ears.

:)
