Frozen cv carb slides

Working on a set of carbs for a buddy's basket case, and the slides in the carbs are frozen in the carb bodies. I am going to soak the carbs all day tomorrow and see if they will loosen up. If they don't, do you guys have any suggestions? Working on an '82 gl1100 for you guys that like the big ladies.
 
Carb cleaner will likely ruin the diaphragms. I would NOT soak those carbs to get them apart unless you plan to replace the diaphragms anyway.

I would try PB blaster, and apply a little heat to the housing. Heat would make the aluminum expand, and could get them loosened up enough to break loose. Caution, of course. Heat could also ruin the diaphragms and other non-metal parts in the carbs.
 
Just to clarify, your GoldWing project has Keihin carbs, even though the are a Constant Velocity design, calling them CV's leads people to think of Mikuni's like I assume AlphaDogChoppers did.
Keihins don't have diaphrams, they have aluminum pistons that slide in the cap. VERY tight tolerances, it is not recomended to even swap pistons in caps, they are matched. Can you unbolt the caps and remove the slide / cap from the carb body... or ar the caps off and the slides are stuck in the bodies? Don't try and "twist" the slide in the body to free them, the slide has a tab that aligns with a slot in the body to keep them oriented. go straight up with the slide, but do not "pry" them up. You could nick the aluminum and causte more trouble.
You CAN spray them with penetrant like PB Blaster and carb cleaning spray like Gumout to free them up.
Do NOT soak them in a dip like Berrymans, it will eat the throttle shaft seals and cause you great greef.
You CAN boil them in DISTILLED water and Lemon Juice.

Thanks Hoosier, I forgot about that page on Randakk's. This is a project that bot shelved for about six months and I am just now getting back in it. These carbs are much different than the ones on my 450. Need to pick up some lemon juice on the way home.
 
So I tried boiling the carb, and no luck. Actually tried it twice. I really don't want to have to replace the two carbs that have frozen slides. Anything else I can try with out dipping them? Boiling the carb did clean it up nicely though.
 
I have read of some study on different penitrating oils show a 50 / 50 mix of Acetone and Automatic Trans Fluid to be the best... would also be safe on your carby. Tape off one side, lay it down and fill 'er up. Let it set overnight and see if it moves.

Machinist's Workshop Magazine tested penetrants for break
out torque on rusted nuts. Significant results! They arranged a subjective
test of all the popular penetrants with the control being the torque
required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment.

Liquid Wrench .............. 127 pounds

Kano Kroil .................... 106 pounds

ATF-Acetone mix......... 53 pounds

The ATF-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 automatic
transmission fluid and acetone.

Note the "home brew" was better than any commercial product in this
one particular test. A local machinist group mixed up a batch and all now
use it with equally good results. Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is about as
good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the price.

My concern is what you're going to find when you DO get them out. ::) If it is corroded that bad, it's going to take some major clean-up, there is most likely going to be some pitting on the slide and its bore.

The way these carbs work vacuum in the cap (Vacuum Chamber) moves the piston so it must move freely and not bind as well as moving equally on all 4 carbs.

Hoosier, After many hours of fighting the same carb I made a decision to find some more carbs. $250 for another set and they came with a complete '82 Aspencade.
 
After thirty minutes, I have both of my left side carbs torn down and ready for a quick boil. Thanks for your help
