Gene in Palatine, IL

What's going on. I'm Gene, from the Chicago area. I've got me a sweet lil' ride, a '77 XS360-2D, the 2D designating the stripped down model, ie, kick start only, basic drum brakes, etc. I really like by bike alot, both for her back to basics design, and the ride she gives. The bike is quite compact, agile and light, allowing them 358cc to haul ass, actually...at least haul ass enough for me, lolz.

I'm slowly tweaking the ol' girl into the cafe racer that, oh yes, she aspires to be. So far, I haven't done too much to her. I shaved down the seat when I first got her (I dunno, I may do some more with that). I also hacked up the front fender, which I kinda regret now. I'm hunting for a chrome XS400 fender for her now. I'm thinking that I may strip the rear fender and the tank in the future, chrome both, paint the side panels and the seat trim a candy apple red (and maybe the engine as well), mirror polish the forks...just make her bling, haha. We'll see.

Anyways, I dig this place, lots of good ideas and handy andys here, it seems. Hope to get to know y'all.
Here's some pics of my bike:

hey gene! i grew up in elk grove village, off of higgins. im currently in milwaukee

Awe yes, Elk Grove Village! Our last house was in Elk Grove, over there by Oakton and Arlington Hts. Rd. I guess you were just north of us, on the other side of Oakton, right?

Riding down Higgins thru Busse woods, nothing tops that this time of year...just wish it was a longer ride.

Welcome Gene!! Palatine (ah reminds me of the Browns Chicken murders), anyway welcome and don't be afraid to ask questions, there are many helpful people here that know their stuff.

Oh yeh, the infamous Brown's Chicken murders. That was Palatine's claim to fame, wasn't it.

Thanks for the welcome. I used the search function alot here already. Good info.

LMAO... i miss browns chicken...

yeah, other side of oakton, near that giant ass industrial park across from the old busse farm... is that even still there?
and does busse woods still have those damn elk?

Yup yup, all's still there. I think they feed them elk steroids...they're fuckin HUGE!
How long you been in Milwaukee? Do you get dirty looks from the locals, riding around on a honda in harleyville? ;D

well, like any occupation, there is always a resistance movement. there is a few guys with classic bikes. Im also apart of a group up here Called Mil Vin Moto, they also have a chicago chapter. My late grandfather owned the strip mall off off higgins there with the carquest in it, across from busse's field. i remember when i was a kid during the fall the old man decided to set up a duck blind in the middle of the field and try and hunt canadian geese. i swear to god there were at least ten squad cars all yelling at him, telling him that they thought he was shooting at planes coming into ohare. hahahahah. ive been in milwuakee for about eight years now. moved when i was a freshman in highschool.

Haha, I heard that guy was kinda nutty! An elk grove cop was telling me that before that land was developed, the dude's farm was a no-go zone...he'd come out pumping his 12 guage to ward off visitors. I dunno how true that is, but it's a good story. ;D Oh well, when you have a street and forest preserve named after you, I guess certain allowances outta be made.

Carquest is still there, btw.

your little yamaha is cool. has some great lines. i vote for losing the rear fender and black wheels. great start.

+1 on the bobbing or removing of the fenders.... i have to disagree on the rims though... nothing like a blackout pair of shoes...

Yeh, ya think? I dunno, maybe. I was considering bobbing it and mounting the plate a little higher, just under the brake light. I think that legally, there's gotta be a license plate light as well, but dunno how much cops care about that so long as the plate is clearly visible.

ya brother... i am in Elgin... i think my TX500 fender will work on the rear of your ride... it is chrome! in nice shape!

Wot up, JR. Thanks for the offer, my good man. I've currently got carb issues to sort out, so we'll have to see what to do with the fenders sometime in the future. I did a little detailing the other day that I'm fairly happy with for now:

Yeh? I was wondering about that, thought I'd end up having to bondo and repaint, if anything.

you still may but sometimes you can get lucky and get it out with cold/heat or getting inside the tank and massage'n it out

Hey dude, wass going on. Naw, I thought about it earlier, but I don't see how that divet could be reached from inside the tank, at least not by going at it from the gas cap hole.

Anyways, all that cosmetic shit is on the backburner (except for a bar-end mirror that's in the mail), as I've got some wacky plug fouling on the left side that I'm hoping to resolve with some carb cleaning and needle shimming. Or maybe it's ignition issues, I don't fuckin know. I'll work the carbs first and see what happens.
