GL 1000 sport wing No Time, No Dime

Bike is coming into its own now Pal, eager to see how your seat turns out!
Just for the record, if my Viper fairing winds up on my GL, I have been contemplating it for a looooong time. ;)
Seeing your Dad pitch in made me smile, Mine was an awesome guy and a genius at fabrication as well... would have been fun to build more stuff with him.

The viper is such a classic, can't go wrong ;)
Yeah dad is getting up there in years but didn't slow him until lately. It wasn't just 5-6 years ago we were building my house and he didnt think twice about walking the length of a 5" wide header 30' in the air. He really has slowed since then. Trying to get what I can with him while he's still able.

So I've made two seat pans and can't decided for the life of me how to finish at least one of them, LOL. i do know I want a removable tail section but other than that I can't decided to add foam (and shape) and wrap the whole thing in vinyl or do one last layer of fiberglass so I can add a strip of round to 'frame in" or french in a pad insert then finish and paint the exposed sides.

What do you guys think? (both pans still need some trimming However, I've pretty much ruled out the second pictured pan. Also I was planning on adding a front bump up to the tank in foam)

Seat pan #2

Seat pan #1 (probably not going to use this one)

I'm thinking there would be about 2" of foam. This would give the first pictured pan about 5" of side height. Worries me if its wrapped in vinyl it will look too thick. The second pictured pan I think would handle the foam but doesn't follow the tank lines as well as the other pan.

My wife and I took a big ride thru the twisties much like what we saw at Red River Gorge Ky. Anyhow I tossed the factory seat on so we both would fit. For reference with the factory seat (and Nelson Rig bags)

Seat pan one, vinyl part way down, paint bottom with same paint and stripe as tank carrying it all the way to the back, maybe with snaps. If I get a few minutes I'll do it in paint to visualize it.

i dig it,imo go low with the seat n make a removeable hump that flows with the hoop.

Def #2, with the pan lining up with the bottom edge of the tank. As Maritime suggested, you could paint the pan, pinstripe the bottom edge matching the tank and use snaps on the upholstery - kind of like the 'old' seat pan.

Make sure you get some padding down the side of the seat too, not just on top.

Appreciate the input fellas. Really helped me out. Decided on #2 of course. Whole thing will be wrapped in Vinyl with piping separating passenger so when I make the removable bump it will fit better.
Anyhow some elves working third shift last night did some work. Removed the fairing, re-mounted Turns, Cleaned up the gauge cluster, trimmed and mounted seat pan. The front uses the factory mount and the back is one bolt. Hope to do more fiberglass on the pan tonight so I can get it wrapped up soon.

(The seat pan actually meets the bottom of the tank but the pins are raised off the bottom making the tanks bottm look higher)

Thanks Junior

Me too, you might be making 15 of us seat pans for sure..
Well I actually made the mold thinking I could shape the bottom of the pan to fit both a modified tail section like on my bike or a stock bike. Might have been a way to make a little extra cash and offer a custom seat pan that no one else is offering. Burst my bubble. I placed the pan on my other wing and it doesn't fit. The pan gets narrower toward the back while the seat rails stayed about the same width.

Sorry for such a lame update. I've not had much time to work on the bike but this is what I do have.

Hopefully this will be the final coat of resin then on to sanding and prepping for paint.

The plan is to paint and expose part of the sides. I draped vinyl over the thing and the sides looked massive like it had a bunch of foam. So Im thinking a cover is going to work best. It will come partway down the sides and snapped on. The exposed edge will tapper to almost nothing at the back. I have a lady lined up to do the work and I hope to talk to her more this weekend when the pan is ready.

Sanded and test fit.
A little bit of filler and will be ready for padding

Painted the frame:

Inner fender:

Thanks guys.

Decided to use the batwing seat as a solo until the other seat and hump are complete. Had to do a little trimming to keep the tail off the rear hoop but it fits pretty nice and only two bolts in front and a pin in the back to swap it out. Then took the big girl out yesterday for about 200 miles of twisties in the mountains. The section in the photograph below is after the road opens up. The rest is much like the tight stuff at Red River Gorge Ky.
Part of the ride was on a bicycle race route named Tour of Tucker County. The race was voted in Velo News as one of the top 10 toughest road races in America. This has to be some of the best motorcycle riding in the country as well. anyhow, I'll post some info at the end if this post for anyone that might be interested in the bicycle race.

Better side view:

So the seat pan is just about ready for paint, padding and cover. I ran out of high fill primer so only the sides that would be exposed got that. the top is self etching primer.

The inner fender is just seen poking out at the back under the seat pan, however after the seat is covered it should all fit together pretty nicely.

About the race, this is taken from their website: "...Be prepared to climb with this course. All classes will face two large climbs of 7 miles in length. This course also takes you along the Cheat River for several miles of wonderful view of the mountain state.
The course will features a mountain top finish on Sugarlands Road. This climb has one of the largest grades in the entire county...

Having tried to put two people on that very seat I think Troy is on the right track :)

VERY NICE!

Bought one of these bikes brand new back in 1978 and put close to 100,000 miles on it.
Even used to show it in the World Of Wheels shows back in the 80's.
Back then there wasn't a lot of chrome parts so I took everything apart and had it chromed or gold plated.

I am looking to pick up another some time soon.

No problem brother I understand. I seem to run into that now and again when I post stuff before its finished LOL.
Richard is correct there is no way to fit two people on that seat.
Cklamer I'm glad youre liking it. To show a bike in world of wheels you must have had her looking pretty spiffy ;) Good Job!

So this is the second and there will be atleast a third lol. Just playing with lines (something I really enjoy)
I don't care for these lines. I'm sure I'll dial something in soon. Just thought I'd show what I'm working on anyway. I should also mention I've kicked around the idea of cutting apart the batwing and extending it just to have another 2 up option. But you all know me and ill probably change my mind before the sun sets haha.
