GS 450: What Jetts?

Been Around the Block
Hey guys,

New here.

I am putting a set of straight pipes on my '82 GS450L that I welded up. I am thinking of throwing some pods on it as well. I have heard that pods on the '82 450 is bad tho, anybody have a case against that?

I was basically just wondering what jet sizes to run with the straight pipe setup? Is there a good place to start for sizes and work off that?

Im very new to the re-jetting process so any help with airfilter/jett/exhaust setups would be awesome!

Thanks,
Pat

Stock jet is 115. If you put pods on it, you will have to go to something around 130 to 145. (Jets are 2.5 increments.) You may want to bump up the pilot jet one notch from stock. (Don't know the jet #.) Main jet is probably the small round type.

Pipes don't affect jetting a lot, but changing to pods makes a huge difference. The GS450 has a very restrictive air box.

You will have a head breather hose with no where to go. I routed mine down to the front sprocket, so an oil vapor coming out of it lubes the chain.

You should have Mikuni carbs?
Basically there are two types of jet for them, small head and large head, forget sizes I think 5 and 7mm?
When you know which, finding jets will be easy

I buy jets at Mike's XS. $6.50 for a pair

My GS450 uses the small round type, but you have to pull the jets from your carbs to be sure. If you just look at the pictures on the site, you will be able to identify which jets you have for sure.
